Too many settlements ruin this game
I've put around 25 hours into this game so far, and I have to say I'm enjoying it. Building is fun, and different to the Fallout world, but too many settlements ruin it for me.

I'm having a real hard time building up just one settlement at the moment. It's too much of a hassle to go out into the world to collect resources, and keep everyone happy.

My Sanctuary hills settlement is at 80% happiness, but I would really like to build and design a real awesome place to look at. The thing is - this one is taking forever to build, and then there are many more settlements to keep happy.

Fallout has kinda turned into a sims game. I enjoy the idea, but Can't Bethesda have just added 4 settlements as an experiment to see if this type of gameplay works?

It says in the help menu that if happiness drops below a certain percentage, then you lose that settlement. So It's not like It's even a choice, but something you have to do in the game.

I was also half way in a mission when one of my other settlements was attacked by feral ghouls, and I failed that mission. I hate failing missions, So I had to load up an older save, and go back to save it. Now I must do that mission all over again.

It's an awesome idea, but garbage at the same time. It ruins the game for me. Hording steel for my super bunker is also a pain, and time-consuming.

Just ignore the other settlement. You can do the quests to conquer new territories to bulid, but you never have to really care for them. Just build a generator, the recruiting thingy and then go and leave the settlement alone. Thats how I do it as I also focus only one Sanctuary hills.

well you didnt have to do a bunch of preston's quests man. that is how you get a ton of settlements. like i currently have around 29 of them and i got to say its fun when you have done almost every thing and want some other things to do. So summary dont do his quests next time.

At the point where you recruit settlers is the point where you commit to build at a site. Nobody forced you to recruit anyone.
29 settlements?

29 settlements so far? Preston can GTF. Think I'll give his quests a miss for now.

No wonder it felt more like work than playing a game.

Too many settlements becomes a chore. Dont bother with the very small settlements, just remove everything there if you already started and they will become abandoned. For the somewhat larger settlements what I did was turn off the recruit beacon once I had about 10 -12 people in them. That way I have enough beds, food, water, defense etc for it to take care of itself unless they get attacked and I need to port over to assist. Keep 1 "homebase" to expand on and store your junk and armor. Get the Local Leader Perk and run supply lines and set up shops, that way you can earn caps and have your scrap available everywhere. Also, you dont really need to decorate everything to keep settlers happy, all they need is the basic requirements (food, water) and perhaps some chairs to sit on.

You don't have to do any settlements. I completed the game without doing a single thing in sanctuary or any other palce.

Ya my first playthrough attemp I kind of just did the bare minimum for Sanctuary hills to keep them somewhat happy, but it was kind of a chore so I just ignored the other settlements. I quit that playthrough and I'm restarting the game now (I love doing this in RPGs [especially Bethesda's] don't ask me why) and I am really going to go all out.

I think it's cool that there are a bunch of places to do a settlement, but I wouldn't do every single one of them. That would be an entire game in itself. I'm going to focus on Sanctuary hills because it's just kind of the character's home anyways, but I am thinking about picking one other settlement that I like the layout of and going all out on that one too, and do like supply routes and stuff (which I haven't even tried yet). I don't think I'll be helping them all, that's just too much in my opinion.

Ya like the one where you go and clear out a bunch of gouls so they can move back, and there is another Codsworth robot there, I cleared it out and went back and told them but never went there again. I mean can't these people take their survival into their own hands or what? lol

ignore them
there are 30 in total btw and each can hold over 20 people if you have max charisma+charisma boosts
