If I were to specialize, then pistols or automatics would be awesome too. But weapons that count as a "rifle" have many more options that you can pick up whatever is availible and get by on their default statistics (give or take some upgrades).
Such as a double barrel shotgun, or a laser musket (holy **** I'm glad I gave the laser musket a second chance).
See also "Melee vs unarmed". Unarmed can be super cool, but it is less "convenient" than blindly deciding on Melee. The average player will have a massive aresenal of melee weapons before they luck into, or google up where to find a Deathclaw gauntlet. (favorite subject of Melee vs Unarmed chats, them Legendary Deathclaw gauntlets).
If this is Fallout New Vegas
I'll use .44 revolver and .50 rifle at the same time, my fave those two and with same perk.
In Fallout 4 pistol and rifle have different perk and up to lv 5, so I just need to chose for being able to take other SPECIALs or perks.
With this game I just have to specialize in one kind of arms.

If it helps, you can put a Long Scope and long barrel on a pipe revolver and I still have it count as a "pistol". (I think a laser with a sniper barrel but pistol grip also counts there, but haven't checked).
Most pipe guns are garbage compared to their "Real gun" counterparts. But the pipe revolver remains respectable for Handgun usage. Being the only pistol option for .45 ammo, and you are able to modifiy it to take .308 ammo.
If you are really desperate for .50 ammo on a pistol, Pipe bolt action can be modified to take .50 ammo.
EDIT: as a comparison, I'm meanwhile finding that the fact I can use "small arms" rifles, AND Energy Rifles just as well a pleasant surprise. I've been honestly having a better time (and using them more often) with Energy weapons in this game than any other fallout game.
So it got that much right.
Then it turns around and makes me mad with the .45 "Submachine Gun" only dealing as much damage per bullet as a .38 pipe auto. WTF?
Pipe weapons not cool, end of story.
I like the weapon to be more real too, so it will not do with modifying ammo usage.
This just about Pistol VS Rifle.
10mm
.44
VS
.45
.308
.50
Thats all
If you take perk in one of the branch either pistol or rifle, it will outdamage the other eventually.
not sure how the mechanics work in game, but i'd imagine they would handle alot differently with the fact that your firing a laser which would have minor recoil, versus something that has a controlled explosive to fire it. that alone would cause your aim to be off for awhile.
But if you just completly ignore Pipe revolvers, you look that much more silly complaining about a lack of options. (I agree .38 pipe guns have no long term viability outside of lightweight 6 lb assault rifles with zero spread)
Anyways. That' "chart" is super wrong anyways. Even if you cony default ammo and not "modified to take it" ammo.
.308 still works for pistols because of Pipe bolt action. (Hey, you aren't ignoring Pipe weapons on your list. You put .45 for handguns, which only the Pipe revolver takes).
Both Pistols and rifles get fusion cells and gamma rounds. Because of Laser and Plasma weapons.
Shotgun shells count for rifles, the way Fallout 4 works.
I admit I forget if the Gauss Rifle counts as a Rifle or Heavy.
I'm sure I'm overlooking something, but that's already basically doubling the size of your "only these ammos" list.
I put away .38 and .45 if I have too, just not gonna use pipe guns
Look, I can understand being annoyed by both the looks, and the comparative viability of Pipe guns. I know I got my own Mad At Video Games guns I hate (Submachine gun why are you so ****ing weak oh my god?)
But if you just completly refuse to use them, that's... not the game's fault you are only counting two whole weapons (as of last count) for pistols.
I'm lv 26 and most of enemies at the same level not go down in 1 shoot even if I shoot them in the head with Kellogg's Pistol.
I like that though, but it become hard for if using non automatic rifle, cause I can only shoot two time in VATS, while with Kellogg's Pistol I can shoot 5 times and much more with 10mm pistol.
