After forcing VSync and turning resolution down to extremely small size, I managed to enter that part of the game, save, restore my settings, load - and continue as normal. Once you find a way passed that white screen, everything else should be perfectly fine (had no problems at all afterward).
Anyway, I'll include my steps here just in case it helps. I got round it by removing the fallout4prefs.ini and fallout4.ini (wasn't sure which might cause the issue so removed both just in case), from the '/Documents/My Games/Fallout4' folder, then relaunched the game and it worked. I had changed the resolution and FOV settings in the ini files, so it they may have been those changes that caused it for me. I didn't change the FPS/VSync settings, so not sure what the exact issue is.
After the memory mission was completed I restored the ini files, overriding the newly created ones, and now its back to a resolution that fits my monitor :)
