If you're playing a female character, he is correct. You are the "Mum" of the family.

In the Queen's English "Ma'am" is pronounced "Mum". It's more like "Mahm". A long soft A rather than a hard A.

Well... there is... kind of. It is what people generally refer to as the Posh. broadcaster/royal English - Of course hardly anyone speaks that anymore, in favour of... what I personally consider gutter English.
