It's annoying though. My original build was going to basically be SPACE MARINE with a "Thunder Hammer" and Power Fist weapon loadout, but sure you can use a Supersledge as far as I know but not use any "unarmed" type weapons. It's kind of sad.
I'm guessing it was balance though. The bleeding effect is unbalanced enough as it is without having a deathclaw gauntlet like this on top of it:

We can only hope some kind of Power Armour focused "free" DLC is released that adds loads of new colours, miscellanous decorations, the ability to use rust remover and of course, add Power Armour power fists and stuff where the hands should be. Since you can change armour pieces on the fly without visiting a Power Armour Station simply by transferring items, that would be a nice thing to add.
There's actually a special piece of Power Armour in the Raider design located somewhere in Quincy called Tessas Fist, but all that does it quadruple the durability of the arm, it doesn't come with any extra damage or anything, sadly.
At least I noticed this during my first "Normal" difficulty and not Survival playthrough, because I would be ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ bricks. Unarmed is a pretty useless skill, and like you mentioned you're much better off using melee weapons. At least I'm doing a decent job at my Fist of the North Star build, but this game is missing a lot of unarmed related stuff that got worked into New Vegas, and a lot of those weapons like the ballistic fist.
Suppose you're right about the unarmed stuff though. If your character can hack terminals, pull the pin on grenades, handle sensitive sniper rifle hair triggers and even aparently put a warhead and a dampening coil into a nuclear reactor then they should be able to wield a power fist in Power Armour though. Or at least modify the weapons for use with Power Armour.
Honestly though the Power Fist looks terrible in this version of the game, as does the Deathclaw Gauntlet. Can see they didn't really put much effort/time into the design. Hopefully they do with future DLCs, though.
FIST OF THE NORTH RAWR! I loved that thing. I used to keep the pieces and build it in the Sierra Madre casino because it was a quest item and couldn't be removed. Take that, Elijah.
I wish they'd put a unique Deathclaw Gauntlet in this game called Xarns Revenge or something like Goriks Grief or something, but then I'm sad and like things no one else does, lol.
