Unless you also put specific clothes on them to help you identify them, that's what you should be looking for to find them: a Brahmin following someone around named Provisioner. I recommend putting different clothes on everyone you assign from now on though. Helps a lot to identify everyone once you get more settlements with 12+ people each.
I have come across an issue, where I took The Castle and assigned a provisioner to a settlement, but not line was formed, later, I discovered the provisioner but when I re-assigned them, I didn't lose any route. It would have been useful to know where they came from, which is why I suggest tip 2.
1. Give provisioners all the same headgear, such as postman/sailor hats + glasses. It's useful to use two items of head gear, as it makes the character more unique, since some settlers turn up also wearing what you have assigned.
2. Assign clothing to different settlements, so that the provisioner can be identified to a particular settlement, it's useful to keep a list, so that you can keep track of them.
This next suggestion might seem like a hack, but using the console to give you lots of postman hats & glasses etc, since the hats are difficult to come by, however, since the settler management system is just rather unmanageable & abhorant, it's a justifyable hack to facilitate less frustration, unless you are a gluton for punisment and insist on finding 20 postman hats etc, good luck!
As a rule of thumb, I have never used any of the console commands to cheat as it really does spoil the game, but I do consider this to be an exception.
I have provided brief info for doing this below wrapped in a spoiler.
Dirty Postman Hat:
001F9793
Postman Hat:
001F9790
ie
"player.additem 001F9790 5"
will add 5 postman hats.
Further tips:
Only assign ONE provisioner per settlement, as they use up population in both settlements, ie create a one-to-one network, A -> B -> C -> D etc. Building resource is shared to every settlement in the linked chain.
Assign a provisioner from the previously created settlement so that the new settlement has resource to build stuff with. It gets messy if you do it the other way round and have to start moving settlers around when you realise that the previous settlement in the chain you want to link to is greyed out from the base population cap.
Settlements get greyed out and you can't assign a provisioner to it when it's population is equal to or greater than 10 + base Charisma. ie, I have 6 Chr, the settlement goes greyed out at 16. That's not to say your max population is 16, it can get bigger, just stays grey. Pop cap is a different story though.
Once a settler is a provisioner, it's nearly impossible to remove the 'Provisioner' label, I have tried many times to re-assign, move to different settlements, but it has never worked.
I hope this helps.
In some instances, I may send them on to another location where I want them for later reassignment.
In for life! it seems...
Oh come on, don't give up that easily. That's why you can buy clothing shops in each settlement, they have enough Postman hats for sale.
To break a supply line, go into build mode and reassign them to something else, such as plants and whatnot or get them to move to another settlement.
They will always be called provisioners, tho' which is actually helpful. For instance, I sent one to sanctuary to supply red rocket, three to red rocket for the two close farms, one back to starlight. The rest i assigning out of starlight to the outlying settlements, like a star shape.
I do find sometimes reassigning can take a bit 'to stick' and have to keep repeating or leave come back and try again.
As far as Provisioners an option to stop one and ask where they're running would be nice.
'My route is from this settlement to this settlement.'
That would tell us they were assigned from the first settlement and travels to the second.
Then just an option to chenge their destination and one to change their start point (relocate them) would be nice.
This whole settlement system really seems like a second thought toss in and is very incomplete.
Why??? Why not make 2 links per settlement? What difference does it make?
