So the minigun is just the biggest piece of garbage
Not even the base model, but Ashmaker which applies 15 burn damage per second. It took roughly 400 bullets to kill a super mutant. I'm sure it's impacted by playing on hard and the fact that my strength is only at 6 and I haven't invested any points into the big guns skill. But is this really it? This is the minigun? I remember the minigun in both Fallout 3 and New Vegas being a top tier weapon, regardless of how you specced your character. I shouldn't be able to kill ♥♥♥♥ faster using a 10mm pistol. This is not the minigun I remember.

I got a minigun with explosive rounds. One of the most OP weapons in the game. Mows everyone down like a Space Marine heavy bolter. You can even kill yourself with it, if aimed too closely, lol.

My main weapon atm: http://i.imgur.com/2rs3RJx.jpg

The minigun is useless, good early game but late game you may aswell trash it. Ammo is rare to find and is pretty expencive. Takes 100 - 200 rounds to down some of the stronger monsters if not more. Only like 200 - 500 rounds in stock at merchants.

Myself im fisting everything with my death claw gauntlet and selling off the bullets i find for some sweet cash.
Yea as stated, 5mm isn't rare by any means. best source is the BoS airship. guy usually sells about 1000 at a time.

Ive found super mutants that carry 500 of that ammo on them. This is without any perks and luck of 1. With perks I guess this turns to 1000+ from 1 corpse?

Did you mash them before they could unleash unholy-hell in your general direction? Because I've noticed that if you peel one off before they go all Tony Montana x1000 on you, that they drop more ammo. Otherwise, it's like 75-150 rounds.

Maybe it's just the fact that i'm a water merchant and i'm 10 CHA/10INT but caps really aren't a problem once you understand how settlements work. I used to hate the fact that we only had decent merchants at Diamond City but you can build your own stores in your towns. I hated the fact that I was forced to be a ratpack and scavenger by having to loot everything, I hated having to use multiple guns because I just can't have enough of one type of ammo or that my scientist character, which was using laser weapons had to switch to a ballistic gun 'cause there was just no merchants selling cells.

Most of those problems are fixed by having your own settlement and leveling up a bit. Low level characters really can't do ♥♥♥♥ but ride the wave.
Once you get more caps than you need, you can easily buy shipments of materials, then sit and wait 3 days, rinse and repeat.

But again, that might just be because i have a charisma character, obviously you can't build stores if you don't have the local leader perk and selling/buying is not gonna pay as much.

Minigun in Fallout 4 is HUGELY under powered, let me explain this to you people:

1) Armor system in Fallout 4. Look it up, but they dont have armor piercing ammo, only mods, which the minigun doesnt get. Low damage weapons are at a disadvantage even if they fire fast.

2) As stated above, Minigun has no mods except barrels, all of which suck. Most guns have mods that increase thier damage by 75%.

3) A fully modded assault rifle does more damage per shot, more DPS, more range, smaller spread then the minigun, all while wieghing less, that's idiotic.

4) 5mm may be small but its fast. In real life there is a 5mm round, its used a a "varmint hunter" the round travels at 2400 FPS. a .38 is much fatter but its much slower.. a 5mm is more deadly to you. In the Fallout universe, 5mm is a military high velocity round, probably 3000+ FPS. It wont do as much damage to "meat" as say, a .45 but it travels more then 3X faster and will pierce armor. One goes through your heat, heart, lungs, throat you are dead.

5) To the guy who said Minigun was never a top tier weapon, you have not played Fallout 2 enough. It had the highest DPS of any gun in the game. 150+ Big Guns skill minigun would kill death claws for me in 1 burst. Combined with fast shot I could burst 2-3 times a turn.

Minigun in Fallout 4 is broken, its not opinion, its fact. If you have played the game or can do minimal math, you can see that. Bethesda must have made a mistake... one they should have caught but they are human I guess. I modded the minigun to 16 damage and it was still too weak vs other guns... 20 is about right, 12 damage would be right IF it had receiver mods like every other gun in the game... but it doesn't.

The Minigun should be massively powerful, yet have the trade off of requiring very high strength or Power Armor to use. It should be very heavy, and not a gun you tote around on a normal basis. It should be something you get to clear out Super Mutant Masters, Deathclaws, and top end Gunners.... not a ghoul/roach killer.

I agree with everything but this. It was top tier weapon when it comes to how far in the game you get it, and what its max possible DPS is. But it suffered from the same low-dmg-per-bullet as Fallout 4 version does. Not as baddly though. But still, you could shoot unarmored targets for 300dmg with it, but against enclave soldier etc. any armored opponent, it just tickles and does little damage, unless you get critical that makes it bypass armor. The Vindicator Minigun was already much better, but the real deal was Bozar which shredded any opponent into pieces of meat in one burst. But the normal minigun was overall lousy and unreliable. Played the game 10+ times.

i recently found a penetrating minigun; i haven't fooled around with it much, but i'm hoping that effect will boost the pitiful damage once i start to actually use it. currently i am buying up ammo for it and waiting till i get the gun nut 4 perk before i truly unleash it.

it turns out i was really lucky to find this beast, and frankly speaking i am feeling a bit op.

i had 4 perk points saved up and i figured i might as well have a go with heavy guns so i got up to lvl 4 heavy guns. i got the second barrel for my penetrating minigun, and had saved up about 5,000 rounds of 5mm (which i buy for 1 cap a piece). i took it to the water treatment plant while doing a quest and ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥♥, it was a slaughter.

i used maybe 700 rounds to kill all the high level super mutants outside and all the mirelurks and some legendary mirelurks. beast!

gonna turn up the difficulty another notch :)

If you invest in Heavy Weapons, they become pretty cool. Especially with Tri-barrel and a good supply of ammo. Its really a weapon class you need to spec into I feel. The Gatling Laser is honestly quite overpowered.

It's funny, I'm level 60 now and I had been feeling like a bit of a death-dealing tank with my upgraded non-auto Assault Rifle for the past ten levels or so. However, I'm now starting to encounter more and more foes that simply won't go down quickly. Sure, I beat them, but they take several sniper (3.5x damage) shots and double that if up close.

I thought to myself that maybe now is the time to switch to full-auto weapons, sure they're less than half the damage per hit, but hopefully the RoF will give a higher DPS.

So, as I had perk points to spare I maxed out the "Commando" perk and modified myself a machine gun (one of the "Tommy Gun" style ones) to be as good as it could possibly be. Hmm, a fun gun to fire, but actually slower at killing than my Assault Rifle.

Re-loading, I change my perks to max out Heavy Gunner. I snag a Mini Gun, modify it (disappointingly few mods) to be as good as it can be and repeat the test. Again, a fun weapon, but it takes even longer to kill things than the machine gun did.

Note: in all my rather extensive exploring, I'm yet to find the Gatling Laser - either from drops or containers - nor have I found any of the Legendary weapons with additional explosive effect. I do have some bleed effect weapons, but they're non-autos currently - not sure if that effect stacks per-shot?

My BEST gun bar none is still the Gauss Rifle I found 20+ levels ago, well over 300 damage per shot - even more when I charge it - plus the sneak bonus on top of that. Slow firing, but it can still one-shot most tough enemies, though many do require 2-3 sneak hits to kill - that's a LOT of damage their soaking up.

Oh, I created a laser rifle, worse for damage than my Assault Rifle, same for a Plasma Rifle. Really, I feel like my weapons peaked 20 levels ago.

It's quite funny really, I'm running around in fully upgraded (to my tastes) X-01 Power Armour, yet I'm carrying a tiny pea-shooter of a gun lol.

All the automatic weapons suck. Recoil on auto weapons is just too high. Nothing but single shot weapons for me. Plus the occasional nuke or quad directional rocket. Also Vats is for ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥.

get the spray & pray version of it from cricket, probably the top 3 best guns in the game :)

overseer's guardian vs base gauss rifle?
A base Gauss is better due to how Two Shot prefix work, the second shot doesn't get perk bonuses applied to it, and because there are two bullets, DR is applied twice.

that is a shame.

do you remember in pulp fiction in the beginning when we got introduced to jules and vincent? they were talking about how many guys were gonna have to be dealt with and they said "we should definitely have shotguns for this", "when you have to kill every mofugger in the room, you definitely need shotguns". well, you could replace shotguns with the spray & pray lol.

Sounds like it would have been a good gun, I still have the Overseers gun available for purchase - at least I assume so, I didn't bother when I was last in that location 40 levels ago lol.
