How to do critical hits?

I can't figure out how to do critical hits. My crit meter has been full for about 39 of the 40 hours I've played. I know crits only work in vats (besides sneek attacks). I heard that space bar activates crits but that has not worked for me. So far all my crits are sneak attacks and I would like to be able to do standard crits. I appreciate any clarification on this.

You need to use vats and select a part and then slap the space bar when the bar is full, but you need to hit it before your character fires

spacebar in vats is the only way to do them as far as i know. unless youre using a controller. should give a button prompt at the bottom of the screen when you can.

if your using a 360 controller wait for the meter to fill up then press x right when you start to shoot

You actually have to place your shots in vats first, then as you're about to shoot (once you hit the shoot button) press 'x' (xbox) and it'll make a critical hit.
