Many A True Nerd's Fallout 4 Character Build Guide (based on what's currently known)
You might know Many A True Nerd for his "You Only Live Once" (no healing whatsoever) playthroughs of NV and FO4 (if you don't, they're well worth watching, and he'll hopefully be making one for FO4 eventually); in any case, here's his guide (based on current knowledge) on how to allocate your SPECIAL points at the start of the game depending on how you intend to play:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sytlmGUQ-qQ
TL;DW:
  • 00:00 - Introduction and discussion about the new system (TL;DW: we only get 21 points to distribute, we have to do it wisely).
  • 02:15 - Melee or Unarmed - SPECIAL: 9 / 1 / 5 / 1 / 2 / 7 / 3... or possibly 4 / 1 / 4 / 1 / 2 / 6 / 10, depending on what the top level Luck perks turn out to be.
  • 11:27 - Sniper - SPECIAL: 1 / 8 / 1 / 1 / 4 / 7 / 6
  • 16:11 - Pacifist - SPECIAL: 1 / 4 / 3 / 10 / 3 / 6 / 1
  • 21:05 - Generalist (recommended for a first play) - SPECIAL: 3 / 4 / 5 / 4 / 6 / 3 / 3
  • 23:48 - Discussion about how Intellince now affects the speed at which you level up, and how it might possibly be worth to start with high intelligence (TL;DW: we can't know if it's worth it till we know how the math works).
It's worth watching, in my opinion.

Interesting, but I'm probably just going to do it myself. Nothing against him, mind, just that I like making my own mistakes (and successes!) rather than following a template. It did give me a few ideas that I'd like to try out, though.

Sure, I'll do the same, it's part of the fun, but it's still worth watching for the discussion on how the perks might work, and what might be worth taking into account when designing one's character.

And, of course, there's people who might want to start playing as fast as possible (that's who the facegen presets are for, I assume), and who might possibly find this useful. :)

Oh, don't get me wrong. I found his commentary useful and interesting. I'm just one of those people who wastes my life poring over every detail of my character and then quitting out of boredom 15 minutes into the game.

Heh, only 15 minutes? I expect to waste at least an hour playing with the face generation... :D

Well, only 15 minutes of gameplay. A good hour in the face maker for sure, and probably an hour nerding out over character motivation / concept. ...I'm a tabletop gamer at heart, okay?
