Need help with Modded Fallout 4
I recently started a Fallout 4 play through with many mods. Like, over 400. But before we blame the mods, know that I played for 20 hours with Zero issues at all. It started at around 20 hours. I've been careful with what mods I download, and I ran it all with FOEdit and aside from some missing items like boxes and stuff, I saw no major issues.

What is happening: the game freezes, the blue loading circle appears, stays for 5 to 10 seconds, then the whole thing un freezes and all is normal, till about a minute later, when it does it again. Upon further investigation, using task manager, I figured out when it freezes, the GPU usage drops to 0% and the CPU drops to about 9 or 10%. It comes back after a few seconds. Using the performance option in Task Manager, I also noticed that when the little line of the GPU usage gets to the left side of the little box, that is when it freezes, and everything tanks. Then goes back to normal until the GPU usage line, or where it tanked previously, gets to the far left side of the box and disappears and then it tanks down again. The FPS stays until it unfreezes, at which point it drops to 0 for just a moment, then goes back up.

Things I have already tried: Made sure all mods are up to date. Changed the FPS and many other settings using Bethani program, no improvement. I updated all the drivers. I spent hours on google reading help forums and trying different things, none of which have made any improvement. I edited the .ini files manually. I installed several lag and FPS drop fix mods and none of them removed the issue, although with them installed, the time it was staying frozen was reduced. I deleted all enemy bodies (including zombies because I am using zombie mods)
I started a brand new game, with all the same mods installed, no issues (only played up till sanctuary). I loaded a previous save from the 20 hour save (previous save was at about 23 minutes into the game, shortly after leaving vault) and ran around sanctuary in a circle for about 10 minutes trying to recreate it, and could not.

I think that's everything, but I'd be glad to provide any extra info anyone might need to try and diagnose this problem.

I am at my wits end here. ANY and ALL help will be VERY greatly appreciated.

Your mods are probably trying to do things with scripts in the background. It might not have been triggered so early in the game. I'd suggest looking at those heavily scripted mods for any comments about that effect.

I had to completely remove and revert a save when I was trying to run The Forest, which on the surface is an incredible Zorkaz mod... but it would turn my screen jank colors and freeze for upwards of 10 seconds before going back, but it would do this *constantly* even after I went back to the Commonwealth. removed it, suddenly the problem vanishes.

Thank you Zekiran. Ok, sorry for sounding stupid, but how do I know what mods are heavily scripted? I'm relatively new to modding (about 8 month or so). Do you want me to post my load order?
Zekiran Oct 3, 2024 @ 6:10pm
You should check each one, on their download page, which is something that should happen *before* you install them at any time mid-game or otherwise.

The load order may also be important for some mods but not others. If their page says "must go below x thing" then it *absolutely must* be put there properly.

What mod organizer tool are you using? I believe they all can export a list of the actual order (and not just the alphabetical list that is often produced other ways).

Can't guarantee I'll be able to tell you exactly what might be wrong but a load order list is definitely good to have for such a thing!

I usually use Mod Organizer 2 but I was having issues with it and the next gen patch. To be fair I am not your modding champion and usually need help doing it.

After trying a few times I said screw it and changed to Vortex. I am now playing the game mostly issue free now that I added 8 more GB of memory. i do still get a freeze from time to time but that'll happen playing it on the potato laptop I am playing on.

It is a AMD Ryzen 3 2200 with 16GB of memory now. Couldn't be happier. I also started being more selective with the mods I am using. If I see a mod that is heavy in usage I don;t use it no matter how much I want to.

My suggestion is to find someone who excels at modding and get them to help you OR start learning how to do it yourself. This last time was a lot of trial and error and restarting from the beginning. I am glad it is now working in a manner I can enjoy it.

Oddly enough the first time I played through the game it was mod free for an achievement run and I rarely ran into issues playing them except for dealing with downtown Boston.
I don't know much about these things, but I'm thinking that with 400 mods, you have hugely exceeded one or all of the files/archive limits, and the game engine goes into meltdown.

A tiny thread hi-jack and plug if I may: :steamhappy:
Love The Forest from Zorkaz.
Luckily it has never caused me issues.
I published a TFB for it BTW, it hasnt gotten all that many donwloads even though I poured my heart into it, since its such a niche location and latest The Forest 5.0 or 5.2 is needed (5.1 is a bit bugged so dont use)

This, I can't see why you would need 400 of all things anyway.

I have 370 mods, yes it takes some effort and skill learning, to make that all work well but,

I have 4-5 times the map of Vanilla, to explore/settle
I have 4-5 times the locations of Vanilla
I have about 3-4 times the NPCs of Vanilla
I have a couple of extra factions
At least twice the quests of Vanilla
New Endings to some of the major faction quests.
All with better looking weapons, armor, landscape, buildings, grass, trees, bridges, clothing, walls and women.

I am basically playing Fallout 5 right now.

Thank you everyone, for the info. This is all really good info. I'm also new to modding. I am learning as I go. This is probably the 5th or 6th time I've scrapped everything, and restarted from scratch. I guess it was naive of me to think all was good just because I made it 20 hours into the game, issue free. Honestly, I probably don't NEED 400 mods, but I WANT 400 mods. What I am going for is a completely unique play through, that no one else has done before. I also played a different game last night, Stronghold Crusader II, and had zero issues. The cpu and Gpu stayed consistent for the whole 3 to 4 hours I was playing. Initially, I found someone on a help forum having pretty close to the same issue, and in the end, it was their hard drive that was junk. But, I played a different game, and the CPU was fine, so my hard drive is ok, right? Surely if it was the hard drive, I wouldn't have been able to play a different game? I have no idea, that's why I am asking. I'm not real savvy when it comes to computers.

I will post my load order and my system specs, just for the hell of it. Maybe something specific will pop out at someone. I don't care if I have to start over again, but if it's just one mod causing the issue, it would be nice to know, or at least use that as a start point when going through all the mods. I once saw someone streaming Fallout 4 on Twitch with over 700 mods installed, so I know it can be done. She had virtually no issues.

The thing that baffles me is the GPU and CPU tanking. I also noticed that when I save, and exit the game to desktop, the same thing happens. Everything locks up, the CPU and GPU tank, and after about 10 seconds, sometimes longer, the game closes finally.

I understand that the play though I was doing, is now junk. That is fine. But, I am still hoping that it's an easy fix. If I was playing for 20 hours before it started to have issues, then am I safe to assume that MOST of it is ok? For example, it first started in Lexington, after gaining the trust of the settlers at Tenpines Buff. I returned to Lexington on my way to Diamond City, and that was when it began. Should I start by disabling any mods I have that alter or edit the Lexington location?

Thank you everyone again for your input. It's very valuable. Everyone seems to agree, it's likely a mod, or a series of mods, causing the issue. I am self taught when it comes to modding, so I'm far from being an expert on the subject. I know some, but clearly, not enough. If anyone can point me to a place to begin, I would be very grateful. Any other info that is needed, I would be happy to provide it.

Thank you everyone, again, for your valuable input on this matter.

Someone asked, and I forgot to mention, I am using Vortex mod manager.

You have a lot of mods I like and also run but but I noticed

-you dont run Buffout 4?
Thats something that tends to lower CTDs.
Also According to some Baka is not needed once u have Buffout 4 .

-Also your RAM is not real high given that you are on Win 11. Probably runnign an anti virus too?
if Win 11 is paired with 16gB RAM or less I recommend playing the game with internet OFF for better performance and fewer CTDs

- thats a lot of active .esps, not too far from the .esp limit. I'd convert many of them to .esl via Vortex "could be light" function.

Which game version are you on?
.163 or .984?

Hello socialmediaaddress3, thank you for your feedback.

I do have Buffout 4 installed. Am I maybe missing the plugin for it? But, when it has crash to desktop in the past, a crash report has been generated, so I THINK it's working. But with this issue, it does not crash to desktop.

Speaking of, when the next gen update came out, Buffout 4 stopped working until it was updated for next gen update. Because of this, I downgraded to pre next gen update, so I'm running .163. Most of the mods have been updated since then, and I tried going back to the next gen update. I reinstalled the game, then updated all the mods (Script extender, etc) and when I went to play, it immediately crashed to desktop. Wouldn't even open the game. So I left it downgraded. Could that be the issue?

I can for sure convert more of the mods to .esl's. That wouldn't be an issue. That's easy.

I will turn the internet off, and give it a try. At this point, I am willing to try anything.

I have a question. I am looking at the task manager, under the performance tab, and I have GPU 0 and I have GPU 1. GPU 0 is NVIDIA GeForce RTX 2060 Super. GPU 1 is AMD Radeon Graphics. GPU 0 is currently being used, and GPU 1 is not. Would I be able to somehow switch it, so it uses the other GPU? Would that maybe help?

I began this endeavor about 8 months ago. I bought my PC specifically for Starfield, and modded Fallout 4. I've watched every video in existence about modding and FOedit and just about any video on the subject. I am NOT ready to give up on this. I would really like to play it the way I have it now, but if it means cutting down the mods I have installed, then so be it. What I was originally going for, was, a survival play through, using ONLY pipe weapons, and with zombies added as enemies. But, I need help with WHAT mods I should get rid of. Zekiran mentioned previously to remove heavily scripted mods. What makes a mod heavily scripted? I probably should know this, and maybe I do somewhere in the back of my brain. But right here and now, I am drawing a blank. The more a mod edits, the more scripts it has?

Social, you mentioned all the things you have "extra" right now in the game. That is exactly what I was going for. I have over 1000 hours in Fallout 4 on PC and almost 2000 hours in Fallout 4 on Playstation. I absolutely love this game, and I want to make it into something that myself and no one else has ever experienced. That is my goal.

I feel like I should add this in. This isn't only happening while moving around. It does it while I am standing still, and also if the game is paused. I also timed it, and it seems to be happening every minute or so. Sometimes I only counted to 58 or 57 seconds when it did it, but its about every minute it does it. Almost exactly.

Also, another question. I've just spent some time looking through my mod list, and already I've found 10 mods I don't really need. So I uninstalled them. Now, I fully understand when you remove a mod mid play through, you usually have to start a new game. That's fine. But, the process of trying to find the culprit mod, how do I go about this? Do I remove a bunch of mods, then begin over, and try and make it to where I was previously? Or can I remove mods, load the previous game (the one with 20 plus hours) see if it's fixed or not, and if I do manage to find the culprit, then start a new game? If I remove the mod causing the issue, will the previous game work? That's I guess what I am asking.

I wish I had found this help forum 8 months ago!! Might have saved myself some stress!

Your mod organizer, f4se, Buffout, and game need to all be on the same version. I know that buffout and f4se are certainly updated.

When you want to troubleshoot your mods, just do it like 10 at a time.

Disable, see the changes or lack thereof, and reintroduce them a chunk at a time. While it will still take a long while, this is why planning is important :D

First off though - only use ONE of any given type of mod for things like locations, models, weapon skins, npc types, etc. So you don't wind up with multiples trying to do the same thing.

"Scripted" - this site has a really good run-down of what they are and how they work, and what to look for!

Would second the recommendation for Buffout 4 over Baka, the crash log alone makes it worth it. Check out this SKK mod: SKK Script Lag Latency detector [www.nexusmods.com]. Can be quite handy to diagnose issues with scripts.

This guide can be quite useful, specifically with load order: {url=https://docs.google.com/document/d/1aknl_ze1hHUCiTBgz55dSzBBsfvG7iGXlRNIGWObyME/edit#] Fo4 Load Order Framework [/url]

I am noticing a lot of building and scraping mods...

This, given the time delay between when you started playing, VS when the problems come up lead me to think you may have a combination of problems.

1: You have broken pre-combines
2: you have overloaded the papyrus engine.

For 1:
You will have to research each scraping mod to see if they have a reported history of breaking pre-combines. If they DO: It too late now, stop using those mods, and start a new game. If they check out... Well it was an idea.

For 2: the Papyrus engine is the internal script engine that handles all the events and actions of everything in the game. I notice you have a lot of gunner "beef" up mods, these can be an issue with how they go about "beefing up" the gunners: If they are increasing spawns (the number of enemies) They are putting strain on Papyrus.
The way to check and solve this to run less script heavy and papyrus mods. (If it increases, decreases, adds actions or dialogue, add quests, or basically anything that isn't worn or held or a building, chances are, it hits the papyrus engine at one point)
