And that's pretty much your answer- it's a good weapon in the early game, but later on, you can find better alternatives.
And you can get it very early in the game. Like level 6 ( or sooner ) , if you have the caps.
The only draw back is the availability of .45 cal ammo early in the game. But if you spec for Commando, it can be effective for a very long time.
It was a double-barrel that, because of the explosive feature, could OHK most raiders at a good 50m or more.
Explosive shotguns are kick ass. But they do have one drawback a player needs to be aware of. Because of their short range, esp. if you perk in Demolition Expert, the explosive effect can do serous harm to your char. If the enemy is too close when you shoot them.
They can also harm your settlers if you use them during a settlement attack or non hostile npc's. Drawing their wrath.
'cause it's iconic
BUT, getting perks and finding a nice legendary make them useful. Sure, a auto pipe weapon does piddling damage and takes a zillion bullets to whittle down the health of a supermutant warlord.. but find a kneecapper, or wounding, etc.. THEN it changes from a plink plink gun into something useful.
That being said once you get the combat rifle which also takes .45, carrying an SMG to utilize .45 isn't so efficient.
Now we again ask why the combat rifle fires a pistol caliber.
Heck my current just-fists playthrough of course i stumbled over wounding knuckles and a kneecapper knife at level 20ish which i can't use. Just luck of the draw.
You can upgrade the Combat rifle to .308. Which makes more sense. But that will take ether a .308 receiver you pulled off another combat rifle or Rank 4 of Gun Nut. But yeah, not a good option early on.
The WW 2 submachine gun for the tank crews, the "Grease Gun", as labeled by the soldiers, did use a .45 cal. Of course, as did the Thompson machine gun.
Yes, normally and far more common. But there have been SMG's made which do not use a common pistol round. The M56 and Sa vz 23 both use the 7.62 x 25mm round. And there are others.
