Display cases storage question

Yo guys, is storing items in display cases safe? I built a few in my settlement home and placed some valuable loot in them, such as Shem Drowne's sword/gold bar, the Children of Atom mother idol, a bunch of other rare loot. Will that stuff disappear?

Well, the conditions required for the items to be stolen mean items are usually safe, most of the time. The settlement must be under attack, and I believe you must actually be there at the time for it to happen. And it doesn't seem to happen immediately upon the attack starting. So if you are there, and the attack ends quick enough, nothing gets "stolen".

So items are usually safe most of the time, but the only ways to totally prevent someone from taking them are to either store them where no settler/attacker can never go (like Homeplate), or store them in something no settler/attacker can interact with (mannequins, which the game technically considers NPCs and not containers).

My Castle settlement hasn't been attacked since I completed the main story years ago.

Then whatever you place in it should theoretically be safe and never stolen. (Though there are bugs and things where stuff can disappear or fall off whatever you place it on.) At least until a possible future attack - you can reduce the chances of an attack, but never fully remove them.

The only true safe item to store your important stuff in is a mannequin. Settlers or Raiders are not permitted to loot them. Some have reported success using a locked container. But I am not sure how they lock them without using a console command or a mod.

The mannequins do not require any special treatment.

I don't get it, why the devs implemented display cases and weapon racks in the first place if stuff can vanish or be stolen from it?

I have my main base in Sanctuary (yeah I'm simplistic like that) but keep my valuables at the Red Rocket, which is a short run away. RR has only robot and companion pops so no one will steal my stuff. I have it connected to Sanct by caravan, so I can enjoy the components pool in the work benches at RR. Still, I wish I didn't have to worry about serfs stealing my weapons and could keep everything central in Sanctuary.
I remember one time when I kept my stuff in Sanct, that a serf stole a Nuke launcher and my whole stock of mininukes when raiders attacked. That was an memorable battle.
