It did tell me that i had to craft the wire or something before i could hook up both the generator + tower together.

Not free. You need copper in the workshop.
The moment you hoover your mouse pointer over an object, a magnifying glass will show up in front of the name, telling you it contains something you has set to search for.
Which means you know you need to pick it up.

Laser Musket upgrades or Power Armour upgrades is all I can think of early game that you need fiber optics for.
Getting the crystal for the radio beacon can be a b1ch though if you don't luck out with random junk or if you accidentally sell/build something else with the crystal.
I've been playing a lot since then & have progressed well with nice guns / materials / armour.
Even bought the diamond city house and spent a good few hours making it look mint.
