or any other companion you can build because they wont judge you
Ada and Curie tie for second place.
That damn dog and Preston tie for the absolute worst followers in the game.
The main plot could have benefited from being set up as a post-apocalyptic Detective Noir story from top to bottom.
DLC: Automatron build-a-followers because customized robot minions can not be beat. No evil overlord of a shadowy cabal of super scientists or high tech raider boss should be without one.
And if you don't have a roleplay... improvise.
My high int / science builds normally use custom robots (DLC) - it's fun to collect components and you can adapt your companion to your playstyle; the variety on one single companion is unmatched.
If you insist on taking one "classic companion" and don't care for any roleplay (for example: my brute cannibals roll around with Strong, most others ignore him): Curie is an excellent follower, she's a medical robot that prefers ranged laser attacks, is super tanky in the early game (she doesn't scale and her hitpoints are chunky up to level 50 or so) plus you can make her your Synth Waifu.
--> If you want to min/max your character: you'll have to farm reputation with all companions anyways since every single companion will give you a unique perk if you max out their reputation. My favourite one is MacCready's "+20% hitchance in VATS for headshots", followed by Curie's "heal for 100 hitpoints once per day if you drop below 10% life". Danse got 20% bonus damage vs synths, ghouls and super mutants, which is also sweet and Deacon will improve your sneak attacks by 20%.
What's this? Looks like a pile of crap, Dogmeat.
I dislike his howls as he gets hit and it feels unfair subjecting him to so many raider bullets.
