Run in background
I like to be able to alt tab and still have games run in the background, like if I go to send a chat message to a friend or change what music I have playing, or even if I accidentally click on a pip window. it can be nice to not have the game sound cut like when it does when it pauses and just have more seamless play. So if anyone knows how to get it to run in the background please tell me.

When the game is out of focus it pauses the game. I did a quick google search and someone suggested this, although I can't confirm if it worked:
"add bAlwaysActive=1 to [General] in fallout4.ini"
That config file is in your documents/my games/fallout 4/

This game does not do well with alt tabbing. Obviously it'll depend on your system for whether you'll have issues going back in and out. Mine are usually just having to do so a couple times before the game remains in focus, but I also have 2 screens - and one of them goes black when I play and that's really the only way I know the game's fully engaged for me.

This in fact does not work
I also found that and did more searching as well this is kinda my last ditch effort to find something.

I know many games can have issues alt tabbing but keeping it running is what I prefer and yes, it has gotten me killed in many a game before, as far as not working perfectly on every system I have faith in my pc as when troubleshooting a v sync issue in the past I got it up to almost 300 frames (was unplayable as fallout runs on a frame=tick system)

"add bAlwaysActive=1 to [General] in fallout4.ini"

go to.. My Documents > my games > Fallout4

there are 2 configuration file things you have to change on .. both HAVE [General] on them
and you need to add "bAlwaysActive=1" under the [General] on those 2 things for it to work

the name for me is "Fallout4" and "Fallout4Prefs"

[for those who are still looking for a way to run the game out of focus]

I am with Zekiran on this on.

Fallout 4 engine works by processing frames and scripts are processed as frames are rendered. If you are alt tabbed then the game kinda stops rendering right?

Not to mention Fallout 4 does not even like alt tabbing unless your resolution and game resolution match perfectly.

However you are welcome to give it a shot though if you wanna play guinea pig :steammocking:

Which if you do, I would place the line in Fallout4Custom.ini because that is the one does PC stuff like determining the save directory for your saves.

im using it.. and it works so :^) plus, i haven't had any troubles so far, i've been playing for 7 days now ... and i also don't like games pausing just by alt tabbing in the first place... as i chat and use discord alot, which makes me alt tab to respond in the first place

and ofcurz that's ok for me as i can multitask very easily ^^
just decided to share since, i saw threads from reddit and such asking how to make it stop pausing while alt tabbing ^^
