Should I downgrade my game version?
As the title says I want to know if I should downgrade the game version since I intend to play with mods installed. I ask due to Bethesda's recent habit of updating as a way to break and prevent modding in their games even thought they're years old now.

Yes, it's the safest option since most of the mods are supported for 1.10.163. I'd recommend you to use these mods if you want to downgrade:

What mods and how heavy a list are we talking. If you only mod it lightly, don't bother downgrading. If you do not rely on old mods with inactive mod developers again do not bother downgrading.

The downgrade is for most people not necessary, scripting has mostly already been patched, and dead mods are readily replaced with newer versions.

But do your own research either way.
I upgraded my game about 3 weeks after the NG landed, I have about 40 or so mods installed and my game runs very well. Probably 60% of my mods are pre-NG stuff, some from as far back as 2017, and I still have the odd CTD every so many hours of play, with some frame drops in the expected zones. I'm slowly busy hunting that pesky CTD down, but in 4K res, my game looks and runs well, 8/10.

Contrary to many on these forums, I actually like some of the stuff they added in the NG, like the Enclave gear and the crazy weapons that shoot pig bombs and baseballs. I find most of the new quests quite fun as well. Also, to my tired old eyes, the game looked slightly better after the update.

So, unless you plan to run FOLON, I would say no, don't.

If you really want the hassle of changing all your launcher and files, and then NOT being able to use many newly released mods...

AND keeping the game's files from updating, good luck with that unless you are very prepared to be offline or risk the chance of accidentally hitting that PLAY button instead of F4SE.

I'm sure right now off the top of my head I've been meaning to play got a few mods but then I got sick and time got away so I'm not sure how many I have or not. I was honestly just wanting to know in general if I should downgrade or not. I'll be sure to look at the mods I want to use soon, so if I do need to downgrade I will.

honestly i wouldn't downgrade cause one of the main mods you need for fo4 to be playable is no longer supported for FO4 1.10.163 and that is UFO4P for some reason the creator of it is only hosting a file for next gen and a file for the GOG version of FO4 which i dont think will work with the steam version

The Gog version works for steam. I am running it as we speak. But you better safe that file somewhere safe if you later want to use it because knowing the mod dev its going bye bye when some drama happens.

To explain the GOG version is simply the pre-nextgen with Creative club content removed due to it requiring DRM. Apart of that it is just pre-nextgen

Downgrade if,

1. You are using a mod that specifically say the latest release is not supported.
2. You are using a collection or modlist that states you should downgrade.
3. You are using a large pre-existing mod list from years back. You don't know if you need to downgrade and don't have the time to find out.

Otherwise probably don't bother.

My game was running with 430+ mod plugins and I recently updated to the next-gen patch.
Only 2 mods stopped working and crashed the game.
One was already obsolete and the other was only cosmetic.

It took me several hours though to systematically activate the mods in small batches to find the culprits.

Tip:
A few mod authors didn't release an official update on Nexusmods, just linked the new version in the comments, so be sure to read up.

Ok thanks everyone. When I get to downloading mods if the majority of them aren't supporting the latest release I'll downgrade.
