Maxson's Battlecoat
Besides cheats and killing him, is there any way to actually get Maxson's Battlecoat?

not sure, but I suppose if you reverse pickpocketed something with better armor value into his inventory, he'd equip that when you leave his pockets, then you can just go back into his pockets and take it.

It's cool and stands out compared to other armors.

...by having a balistic resistance of 50 and nothing else?

I mean it's a cool looking coat, but there are better clothing items out there.

Look at the Minutemen General's Outfit. Its balistic resistance is 5 point lower than the Battlecoat, but it also has an energy resistance of 80, which I think is more than enough to outclass the Battlecoat.

But it makes you look like a toy soldier.

Clearly, people who like Maxson's Battlecoat aren't after it for the stats.

With ballistic weave, the coat itself is pretty damn great with its stats.
Plus, it goes great with my outfit, so I'm not complaining.
Let me just pull up a screenshot real quick...

I realise that, and I mentioned before that it is a good looking clothing item.

It's just that for stats and armour ratings, there are better options available, like the MG outfit (no, not Metal Gear)

Of course there are better clothing items out there. That's just not the point, though.

See there's the problem. I never bothered with Railroad quests, so I never got around to getting Balistic weave. Im going off of the pure stats of the items here.

Might have to give it a try to see how the two match up.

Does the MM General uniform have ballistic weave support?
If not, it's actually worse than maxxon's battlecoat, I'll have to go and see.

I'll do a final comparison, I'll load up two screenshots so it can be put to rest.

Once I'm done with the comparisons, we'll see what's better.
