Don't forget computers with a simple operating system...

But that's the lore.

crazy, right? almost like they didn't have color TV back in the 50s or something....or maybe that's the point. you know, high technology jarring against the 50s aesthetic

In Fallout world they burned money/resources into military and Nuclear tech... and forgot everything else.

Also almost no transistors, no microprocessors, and a bunch of other stuff.

Transistors weren't invented in Fallout, meaning technology is still primitive in a way even though it's highly advanced due to the nuclear technology

Remember, Fallout is in a parallel universe. Much is similiar to our 'real' earth. History is similiar. Nuclear energy not work same way there. Many possible reasons for no color TVs: Social taboo, custom, and what imperialus and JC Jensen wrote.

At some point in the 1950-1960s, The Fallout universe and our universe split apart. While our universe kept progressing the way it did, the Fallout universe remained at a stand still of incredible weapons developpment, and literally nothing else. This caused them to have the same 1950s aesthetic for centuries, and only on October 23rd, 2077, when the bombs fell, did this culture change into an attempt for survival as people were rushed into ominous (and after the Vault Experiments, terrifying) Vaults, while others took shelter on the surface, where the explosions and the exessive radiation killed the surface population or mutated them into Ghouls.

Yeah without the trransistor and mircoprocessor things like the Mr.Handy's and other robotics technology dont make much sence. I mean hydrolic motors and actuatosr are all fine and dandy (Mechanical structuring is sound) but the amount of AI that seems present in the unisverse would not be possible without Transistors and Processors.

Still, one would think it would be possible considering color TV was functional in the early 40's. It just wasn't until the early/mid 50's to where it was available to the public in a much better state. Certainly a few years difference(No matter if the divergence is shortly after the end of WW2 in 1945) wouldn't hinder it being developed for over a century. I guess this is why it is fiction though, can't take it too seriously.

Why are the toilets so "normal"

Color TV exists since WW2 but didn't become general until around the 60's. B&W was more frequent in the 40's and 50's. Fallout is based on an alternate history that reflects the idea that the people of the 40's and 50's had of what the future would be like. Now how did they come up with that idea because it's pretty twisted (much easier just make the future as WE imagine it), but it gives the game a lot of flavor.

The whole style of Fallout is post war 50-60s America
Colour TV wasn't a thing. It's part of the setting.

They had tranisistors, but it was a relatively new thing.. like months before the war type of new.

Bethesda (and many of their fans) confuse the fact that the pre-war World stuck with Art-Deco and post-war levels of Nationalism with the idea that the world remained completely unchanged after 1949.

That said, I will lend plausibility to the idea Fallout's world simply never saw Color TV as something that needed to be invented.
For example, The Printing Press could have been invented many years before it was first made. Just nobody thought to make it.
