Components, ammunition, or explosives.
You build the 'pod, connect it to power (6 units) , use the built-in terminal, and pick something to look for -- adhesives, aluminum, nuka grenades, whatever, there's a fair list. The pod opens up, an eyebot emerges, and it floats off. You get a misc quest to "Wait for the Eyebot to locate <x>". Eventually it replaces that with a miscellaneous quest to go somewhere and pick up whatever it is you asked for.
Quantities seem to be usually low, so it's probably best to use it for rare things that you can't craft, like nuka mines -- don't expect a bonanza of economy wonderglue or a whole case of aluminum cans.
