Dont expect a single gun to work for all situations and enemies.
I miss the Jury Rig perk from that game, but since weapons/armor (not talking power armor) don't have to be repaired I guess its not needed anymore
Combat rifle (which I'd normally prefer in .308) versus assault rifle (always 5.56) is more interesting, perhaps. 5.56mm ammunition is common in turrets, but they only provide small quantities.
I get the impression that in the lore, there really wasn't an M1911 (or at least it wasn't nearly as influential) and the 'standard' sidearm was instead the 10mm. What screws around with that theory is that you'd expect the standard SMG to use the same 10mm pistol rounds as well -- and that has existed in earlier FO games -- and instead we get what appears to be a .45 Thompson. So, whatevs. :/
NV did have the .45 Auto pistol, but only in NV and even then, only via DLC.
(For that matter, where's the Guass pistol from FO2? *sigh*)
