Keep it up !
I came in with F2->F3->NV->Skyrim->Oblivion->F4. I got to say though, BGS is on a great decline from what they once were, especially with Fallout 4. They scrap what made the series great and replace it with things more suited for the current generation of gamers - which is mindless shooting . Same with Skyrim as to Oblivion, it became much more simple (but still very good [too bad they didn't do that with F4 too.]) I could go on and on but I'll cut it short so my comment doesn't turn into a wall of text.
I can give you my opinion: great game, lots of fun. But after waiting 4 years I expected Bethesda to do a bit more.
I expected to see a new society rather than a wasteland and a few factions. Skyrim feels more epic and has a more interesting world.
Even the design is a bit uninspired. Having said all that, it's an awesome game.
That's not true, there are many game franchises where I like the newer stuff as well or more than the older stuff. (eg, new XCOM vs old X-COM UFO Defense) ...
Saying you're an fan of RPGs and have played them for 20+ years but not playing any of the Fallouts and then starting with FO4 is a bit of a head scratcher to me. Pardon me if I sound rude, I'm not trying to offend you, but 4 is the most neutered and streamlined of the entire series. So I find it odd that you'd start there.
As far as a role playing game is concerned Fallout, Fallout 2 and Fallout NV excel in those departments, while Fallout 3 is merely average and Fallout 4 is incredibly simplified. I'm not saying Fallout 4 sucks (I certainly enjoyed if you can't tell), but I'm able to acknowledge 4's shortcomings in comparison to older iterations.
For refrences sake I started with Oblivion (console) --> Fallout 3 (console) --> Fallout New Vegas (console/pc) --> Skyrim (console/pc), Fallout 1 & 2 --> Fallout 4.
Ive played many many RPGs over the years. The first RPGs i played were on the SNES, Secret of Mana, Breath of Fire, Zelda, all the way up to the PS, stuff like Suikoden 1 & 2. Theres more than one series of RPGs than Fallout. Fallout just never caught my attention in the past.
Ah, my bad. Again I wasn't trying to be rude. Those aren't western RPGs, that's what got me I suppose. It's just that most long term RPG fans on here come mostly from western RPGs like Baulder's Gates, Diablo, Planescape and of course, Fallout.
Yeah i played Baldurs Gate 1&2, Icewind Dale etc. My favourite RPGs are Japanese style ones or Tactical RPGs like Vandal Hearts or Shining Force (my favourite game series)
Tactics<New Vegas<F3<F124.
F1 was superb, but was it better than the much bigger, car-toting F2? Damned if I know; never was able to make a preference. But today, even though I've yet to complete F4, I'd have to say it's up there with those two. Sure, it lacks some polish, and it's got some flaws, but bugs and quirks are inevitable. F2 was in absolutely no way at all bug-free, for instance; quite the contrary.
Fair enough. Since you are an RPG veteran though, I would recommend trying the original two Fallouts, though. While I was far too young when those games were released and I'm no expert, I have played old school RPGs like Baulder's Gate and Diablo and I do think that Fallout is the pinnacle of old school western RPGs.
Fallout 3 was great too.
Fallout 4 is meh, doesn't feel like an RPG but still it's an ALRIGHT game.
For me, Fallout 1 takes the cake due it's atmosphere and world. It was both haunting, real, bleak yet had sprinkles of subtle dark humor thorought. It just hit all the right notes, imo. Plus, The Master is easily the best villian of the series.
Mostly agree, as said, it's superb. And F2 had that hideous "temple of trials" tutorial-ish thing in the beginning (worst single game design idea of the entire series, right there). But while F1 was everything you describe, it was also very much personal. F2 expanded the world something massively, and I don't mean just a bigger map. While F1 has got hands down the best, most engaging storytelling in and of itself in the series, F2 put all that happened there in a wider context. That's something F3 tried to build on (and sure, NV or even Tactics), but in my opinion it didn't succeed nearly as well as F4.
