CTD when Fast Travel or On Foot approach to Castle
Okay. Had just started the Old Guns quest and found that upon approaching the Castle, whether on foot or by FT the game would crash to desktop. I thought it was rather odd so I tried going back to an earler save. No joy. Even when back to saves from before even going to the Castle the first time...again CTD as I approach South Boston and the Minuteman Meetup.

So far I have tried the following:

Eliminating all ESP files and loose file addons...CTD

Reload saves from way before the Taking Independance assault, retraced route...CTD

Tried refreshing Fallout.ini file...CTD

Tried eliminating the plethora of old saves from save folder...CTD

Verified files through Steam...CTD

Fresh saves from before Taking Independance, totally vanilla...again approach or FT produces CTD

Whats weird...as I was replaying the Taking Independance mission to troubleshoot this I distinctly remember having several CTD's when I played it the first time, but somehow finally got past it. Not anymore...It's pooched, bad. It's almost like theres a fundemental flaw in the Castle area

I'm at 221 hrs into this. Anyone have any success with fixing the Castle CTD or do I just need to wait for a patch?

After a lot of playing out old saves I'm pretty sure that the CTD is related to something that happens during the Taking Independance quest. I seems that shortly after the Meeting the Minutemen part of the quest is completely the saves are screwed.

Have played it with mods and gone back and stripped them out, clean saved and played thru...either way the Castle area breaks during Taking Independence.

This has got to be a patch fix. Something in the quest/area is TARFU
You aren't alone, the CTD started happening for me after I got my first attack from super mutants at that place

so I don't even trust that settlement because of this, I'm not even gonna bother building on it, I just quickly do all the missions on it and leave the place

Yeah I can't even coc into the castle. I've shot over a support ticket to Bethesda days ago...nothing. Never experienced anything like this before. The problems would always clear with time. I've tried sleeping an ingame week to reset the zone...still CTD

Been all over the web looking and this looks to be a pretty repetative issue with Santuary, Monsignoor Plaza, the Caslte. Looks like this needed to cook a little longer in beta?

Think I'm about done. Anyone got any clues how to fix?
Do you play the game with more than 60hz? Because that can break the game's natural physics and could cause glitches.
Hmm....

DId you try a new game? Honestly never saw this problem for before.
Validate your files just in case a file is missing or got corrupted.
OK do this. It's a little long winded though. Disable all mods via the nexus mod manager. If possible remove all loose files and INI tweaks.

Start a new game (Your old character will be safe). Go through the start sequence and exit the vault. Hard Save your game here.

Now enter the console and type exactly as printed:

COC TheCastleExt

Now press enter and exit the console. If its worked and you are successfully in the castle then your game saves may have gotten borked or mods, INI tweaks, console use are to blame.

Next thing to do is re-enable your INI tweaks and try again by porting there same as before. If it works then rule that out and add back in your Mods and try again. If it works then, it could either be a mod with a script that's started to play badly after prolonged use.

If you suspect a script then go through all of your Mods that you were using at the time (On your main save), visit their nexus page and look at the uninstall instructions. If any say you have to use a stop command from the console then note it down, check all mods.

If you found any scripts removal instruction. Load your save thats corrupt (Make sure the script mods are enabled via nexus mod manager). Enter the console and use all the Stop commands to uninstall the mods. Exit console, save game, exit game, remove mods completely, restart game, load save and use the above COC command again.

If it work then happy days, if not then your save is probably beyond repair.

Hopefully when we get GECK and the modding community has created tools (Not sure how far they have gotten yet) then the process of uninstalling script mods will be easy as they was in Skyrim.

Good luck.

This recently occurred with me. I had Build High mod installed prior to taking the castle and I think that screwed it up. I disable the mod, loaded the game, and it stopped crashing. I saved, exited, enabled the mod, and restarted and it seems to be working fine again...except that freedom radio doesn't work, but that MIGHT be a separate issue.
