Anyone notice all bolt action rilfes are left handed?
Being a lefty, weapons in games always feel funny. however the rifles in the game definitly felt too correct to my orientation, then i noticed that the bolt is on the side that a left would use it. for those who dont know guns, the bolt should be on the side where the shooter can reload without having to move the rifle from their shoulder and stay sighted in (generally anyway). I wonder why Bethesda either did not catch this or just dosent care.

Yet the stock on one of the sniper style rifles is cut out for a right handed bolt. Notice that? Go figure.

People like to see the shell casing fly out of the reciever... Stupid, I know. Ever play just about any FPS and see the ejection port on an assault rifle on the left side? Thats a good way to get a face full o' brass. However, I'm a righty and I prefer a left-handed bolt on my bolt-action target rifle. I don/'t need to move my rifle in the offhand position to rack the bolt. Generally, a rifle is too heavy toward the reciever, where most of the metal is concentrated, to keep it shouldered in that position. Maybe that was part of their logic?

I did'nt notice this but im thinking its partly general oversight and the fact that people like to see some sort of gun action, with the bolt on the left its give players something to look at.

I think the "Ohh looky the bolt moves when i shoot" aspect is right. i did not notice the assault rifle one but ill have to look into that now.

My 50 cal has the cutaway for the bolt handle on the right side of the stock but the bolt is lefty. Go figure.

An artifact of the visual layout - you always see the left side of the gun when you're in FP view, so the only way they could show you that it was a bolt action as opposed to semi-auto or full auto is to put the bolt on the left - so just pretend you're shooting a southpaw weapon, right handed.... and yeah that's even more awkward than the charging handle on an AR.

All bolt action rifles are left handed

All cases eject to the left.

Its just the usual idiocy of modellers not really understanding why things are the way they are on a gun.

If you're a righty and holding the rifle in your strong hand (right), with the weak hand (left) supporting the forestock, the rifle is designed for you to support it between where its seated in your chest/shoulder and the left hand on the forestock. Then you can use your right hand to work the action without having to take your eyes off the aim picture for a fast follow-up (if needed).

I don't know - maybe if you're petite, but generally rifles are *not* too heavy to support between forestock and shoulder alone. As a matter of fact, the weight distibution is such that holding it by the grip and stock leaves a huge percentage of the weight hanging off the front and makes it very difficult for anyone without an Schwarzennegarian physique to maintain their sight picture between shots.

To use it the other way means you would have to remove it from your shoulder to work the bolt and put it back or risk smacking yourself right between the eyes with the bolt if you don't.

Now - your gun, your shot, do it however it works for you. But its poor form and very inefficient to do it that way.

If I remember correctly, the opening cutscene shows the Male Sole Survivor wielding a Laser Rifle left-handed, so maybe the game is trying to tell us that our (male) character is a leftie, but having your gun on the left side of the screen would be wierd for most players, so it's ignored in the gameplay, aside from the left-handed bolt-action rifles.

False: I'm assuming you are NOT being sarcastic. Casings that are ejecting to the left (across your face) are left handed. On a (normal) right handed rifle, the bolt/chamber is positioned on the outside of your view- on the right. So you would be using your right hand from the trigger to pull the bolt back, causing the casing to kick outward and away from your view. In this game, most the weapons are left handed being held in the right.

1. You necroed this thread for that?

2. You misread my post. Because I already covered that in the last sentence.

3. You're in luck - I'm here and I'm bored. All cases eject to the left - because videogame gun modellers don't know why things work the way they do on a starshipfirearm.

All videogame bolt action rifles have the bolt handle on the left because? Videogame gun modellers don't know why things work the way they do on a starshipfirearm.

Seriously WTF did this get necroed. the overall consensus was that it was made left handed and held on the right so that little kiddies could see the bolt move when it shoots.
That and modellers have probably never even held a real firearm let alone shot one on a range to know why things are layed out on a gun the way they are.
