Do Vertibirds Always Crash? (spoilers)
So I noticed that since the mission "Reunion" when the BOS airship arrives there's a lot of vertibirds flying around wherever I happen to be adventuring and they get into battles with enemies on the ground. And it seems like every single vertibird gets shot down (and usually aims right for me when it crashes). I've never seen a single vertibird actually win a fight against ground forces, especially if they're attacking a stronghold of some kind. This sort of makes vertibirds look extremely weak and makes me wonder how much resources the BOS actually has if they can afford to lose 2 or 3 a day. Has anyone ever seen a vertibird actually wipe out an enemy base while watching from the distance? Or even NOT end up crashing?

I've wondered that too. The BoS is completely inept in this game. Can't even take on 5 super mutants without losing 3 or 4 troops and a vertibird. No idea how they afford that.

Vertibirds are too weak. But I think that the BoS has an unlimited number of them. There is a mod that makes the vertibirds more durable.

Yes, but rarely. Most of the time they're shot down. Considering the Prydwen only has docking arms for four vertibirds, I have no idea where the BoS finds replacements.

it's a game.
too many people only consider real life logic and not gameplay balance.
Ever wondered where are theese supermutants are coming from every 30 days?

Yes that is why Bos sux so much, they betray friends and keep to crash or being wiped from everyone, being a legendary raider or a groupo of supermutants, their really can do dmg only to feral ghouls :P.

This really has nothing to do with "suspension of disbelief" which I have no problem doing with games or movies. This is more of a "what's the deal"? I understand why the BOS shows up and I understand that the vertibirds flying all over the Commonwealth is supposed to show that the BOS means business. What I don't understand is why the AI is scripted in such a way that the vertibirds get into a fight and then inevitably get shot down. I get that having a vertibird take out a Super Mutant base so I can just waltz right in and loot it or complete a mission there would take agency away from me as the player but why not just have vertibirds swoop in, shoot up some enemies and then fly away unharmed? Why make them crash all the time? And even suspension of disbelief makes the idea that a couple of raiders with a rocket launcher can not only shoot down a vertibird but also take out 3 or 4 paladins in power armor AND a couple of scribes seem sort of hard to swallow. Even if "it's just a game".

But I will say that I haven't completed the main story yet so there may be a reason why the BOS has to appear to be losing it's war in the Commonwealth in order to propel the plot. But either way it would be nice to stand on a ridge and watch them win a fight every once in a while.

It's still a bit silly how the BoS constantly loses vertibirds. Bethesda could have beefed them up a bit so they're not always being brought down by small arms fire, or made it so they withdraw when the vertibird has taken enough damage.

Not really, because that actually has an answer: The Institute. They were making supermutants for 46 years, so who knows how many they've released into the Commonwealth..

I believe they didn't want to make the Brotherhood of Steel more troublesome to deal with compared to other factions, so there'd be less bias when we each made our decision on who to support.

If you are among those who have realized the Brotherhood of Steel are the only true option, however, there are mods that can introduce the proper threat the vertibirds deserve.

really doubt raidesr go nuts over the high level BOS soldiers.
Like have you seent he legendaries? they be cray cray.

Of course if they're outnumbered 4 to 20 then it's understandable. The problem with the vertibird ai is that it's too complicated. it drives around and make sweeps in and out ect. it takes a long time.
They'd been better off circling around the target and having the minigun fire 24/7 at the target. Simple is sometimes better.

At least when the alternative is go in, get shot, fire at the wall the raiders are hiding behind and then drive around getting shot more.

still wouldn't be in the same spot though and there would be more of them at once, not come again every 30 days.

it's not like the institude has a monthly experiment where they release new super mutants either...

While most of the time, they do crash, I sometimes come across them landing and dropping a couple BoS guys. One time they dropped off maybe 8 BoS guys (probably not all from one vertibird) near a super mutant stronghold. A car blew up and killed them all, however. Have I seen an actualy vertibird win a fight against ground forces? no.

Nah, can oneshot them :), even a scientist with an institute laser can beat them, energy weapon does massive dmg to their armours ^^ (try to stand in front of a laser turret with a t-60f armor without bonuses to energy weapon protection and you will see... consider most of bos have t-60b even at lvl 108 (my level)), heck i have seen mutants with assault rifles and raiders with .308 weapons doing what they want with them.

They can win vs ground forces that can't answer = ghouls, bad that ghouls run very fast and the landscape is plenty of covers, not mentioning that vertibirds minigunners don't know how to deal with cooling system and just spray around lol.

Says who? If you go in and clear out a spot, why can't more supermutants take it back over once you leave? The Supermutants in Fallout 4 aren't the feral savages of the Capital Wasteland, they actually have some organization and leadership behind them.

They were making supermutants for over 40 years. There could be thousands, if not tens of thousands of supermutants roaming all over the Commonwealth. They wouldn't need to make more at this point.
