Play Fallout 4 from external hard drive?
Can i play the game from a external hard drive? Ive already downloaded it on to the drive and tried to play it and it will stop working even before i get to the main menu. Can i play it or do i need to downloaded it on the pc itself?

I have 2 ssd's. one for games and one for my os, and it works fine for me. That being said there are a few things you need to do. Steam is very good at keeping most problems from happening you dont even need to do a reg backup if you format your os drive. But for uplay and origins you need to backup the reg string and change settings to make sure the games install and save in the correct directory. so in short yes it works, but Im not sure exactly what you did, make sure steam is on the external drive and that might fix your issue.

It's not optimal, but why are you assuming that's the reason the game isn't launching? Have you tried installing it on an internal HDD?

The hard drive is a portable seagate, not a SSD type but a reglure drive.

It should work, just add a steam library directory to it...

I ran out of space on my laptop, so i putting my games on the external. and when i click play game a windows pops up telling me the game has stop working and is trying to find the problem.

If the game won't load from the external then I guess that's your answer. If this HDD is connected through a usb it probably doesn't have enough bandwidth to move game content to your GPU and CPU fast enough. That's why you should always put games/programs on your main drive and other files on your external. Have you tried playing the game on your internal drive? Move a ton of pictures/music/videos to the external and try that. It also could be likely that your laptop doesn't meet the minimum requirements.

If the drive is on USB I wouldn't recommend it, you would be stuttering like crazy and have even longer load times running it on an external drive

If the drive is on ESATA however then it might work cause its faster

this is a tough one, if I were you I would buy a new ssd, with a higher capacity so you can add anything you want. Samsung has an 850pro 1tb for 450 dollars.

It was a educated guess based on the information presented.

What about the directory? How do I do that?

If I were you I would install steam on the external drive, and then re-install the game through steam. But as it was stated above since you have a laptop it probably wont run great. If I were you I would free up some hard drive space, or buiy a new disk. go to settings and downloads and click on steam library folder on top.

with an external drive your load times will be horrendous
free up some internal hdd space and save yourself the frustration

This is definitly the best way to go, but what if op cant free up some space. Plus its a laptop. The chances he has a great gpu is slim. its a loose loose situation. If you can afford it I would buy a larger ssd.
