What actual substantive benefits do settlements give me?
I've put about 10 hours into the game now. During that time I've been building up my settlement at sanctuary hills, but I'm not sure what actual benefits it will give me as an individual in the game.

So far the only beneficial thing it has given me is the extra junk from scavaging stations. I can't build stores because I don't have anywhere near the charisma to get the local leader perk. I really would have loved to have known how necessary that perk was for a good settlement before I started the game.

So without the ability to build stores (something I won't have for a long time even if I put all my level points into charisma), what benefits will settlements give me as an indvidual? At this point I'm wondering if it's really worth the effort to build them up at all.

The way the economy in the game now works, with most loot actually not being worth a damn, it's useful for making the caps to buy gear. That's it though, unless you're a fan of artillery, which has mixed results for me and is not worth relying on. There are 30 settlement locations and the entire loot system has been shaped around it, which would be ok, if it wasn't at the expense of real game content and hadn't been done in such a half-assed manner.

The stores are crap, they raise happiness in a location, but, considering the high expense of construction, thousands of caps, they output very little in the way of caps in return. The tier 4 traders, which are awkward to find, are also heavily glitched and tend to vanish, or not show up at all.

Put 1 point into the Science perk (and 2 into Local leader and cap collecter if you want to build strores). Build as many Industrial Water Purifiers and you can. Sell the ridiculous amount of purified water at the stores you built (or sell it wherever a vendor is allthough building stores will just make it quicker). That is how you will have ALL the caps in Fallout 4

Hmm, for shop, they kind of gave you few caps in workshop every 3 day no visit during that time, I build few more in other settlement, had not got any caps from them, (personal not worth it for that alone, even I had not visit them in a week, only real good reason of shop is 3 level weapons shop sell fusion core for power armor and ammo if you unable to find for your fav gun's ammo, trade those with water (3 level water in settlement, I had 4 of them that gave me 100 water to trade with those ammo, ect..), but only need one settlements (I had many settlement all over, but it's just because I hope use flare gun to summon minutare men, so I find it's still too short range and useless, sadly, so basic sanctuary is all player's need if they want simple benefits, any more settlement become less benefits, beside for role playing fun for minuteman main quest if you want go full join faction and not other, on otherhand, you don't need settlement if go join brotherhood of steel, as they had ton of fun quest easy gave you caps, but I think best not visit their air carrier 3 day so mechiane respwan items, not sure there is safe or there item respwan inside of that airship, but build settlement airport near by them, but it's had no food, limited of water, I think, but that place is best stored of junk for upgrade, and repair power armors, weapons, ect.

Sorry about english.

I use it as a convenience thing for one location storage, crafting, selling stuff, adhesive farm and buying ammo, armor for companions, junk.

Nothing in the game is really based around substansive benefits. You don't need them since there's stores in cities already. It's more of an rp/convenience thing in my eyes.

So what is the best way to get settlements to give me caps if I can't make stores?

Don't think you can make caps without the stores from the settlement, well you could build farms to harvest crops if you wanted then cook some stuff to sell. Most of caps come from selling stuff to shops, waiting 48 hours, then repeat the process until got nothing left to sell.

Water purifiers is the way to go if you want caps from settlements. I currently have over 3k purified water I still haven't sold yet (I need to invest in some shops so I can sell more quickly).

You can put points into SPECIAL stats instead of Perks if you want to raise them after initial character start so you can get CHR to 6 in order to get the Local Leader perk.
For me it's simply fun to muck about with settlements (bugs et al), but one of the main reasons I first started them was to start farming the ingredients needed for adhesive.

Purified water is another boon as stated above to make an extra cap or two.

Assigning settlers to scavenging however has yet to yield a better pile of junk to be preferable over just looting every last bit you might find yourself.

Stores are a bit of a hit and miss, and rely more on if you want to have a character that spends ingame years in the commonwealth. Like scavenging I have yet to see a return in funds for starting them. But hey, at least having a bar/clinic makes the settlers happy.

Something I posted in a similar thread yesterday.

Settlements provide:
-Free salvage, boosted by population and number of people working salvage stations.
-Free crops based on what you plant.
-Free purified water based on the amount of water purifiers.
-Free fertilizer from brahmin.
-Shops buy and sell items to you, and make you a small profit. Special residents can be assigned to specific shops to sell powerful unique items.
-Artillery support in an area around them based on the number of artillery you place and asign settlers to.
-Random quests that provide exp and companion affinity.

They can scavenge pretty much anything, including advanced/valuable parts. One or two on scavenge duty wont be that impressive, a handful of items per day. If you have like 50 or 100 settlers scavanging at different settlements, with trade routes, it's an impressive influx of materials.

I know, but that would still take forever since I started the game with only 2 charisma.

Like I said, I really wish the game had told me how high my charisma would need to be for such a basic function like putting shops in your settlements.

It's even more annoying because shops are so rare in the world. I couldn't find any near the starting area. I had to go all the way to Daimond city just to find a place to sell all the pipe guns and raider outfits I had collected in the first few hours of gameplay.

I understand how you feel, I think its like a trial and error situation setup so players can have a different experience, I mean old games didn't even have tutorials or forums like today and still managed some how.

If it is any consolation if you had put in 6 charisma from the start you could have had a worst build than what you started with, but you could always use console commands to just shift your perks over i guess.
