can't wear stuff under armor?

Why is it that yesterday I could wear a Brotherhood of Steel uniform under my combat armor--i mean power armor, just regular combat armor--but today I can't. Yesterday i could wear a drifter's outfit, military fatigues, army fatigues, even a suit under my combat armor, but today I can't. Why?

I turned off mods, doesn't help.

The developers didnt layer clothing and armor properly in my opinion.

I see so many NPCs and mobs running around in their underwear while wearing combat armor or they try combing a hat with cage/spike armor.

A lot of outfits (suits, notably) are incompatible with wearing any armor on arms, legs, or torso. Military fatigues and army fatigues are notable exceptions as take up exactly zero slots.

This gets awkward if you want to provide any armor to a settler, because giving them just arm armor will result in them stripping off their normal settler clothes.

You need to be more clear. I don't know if you mean that you can't wear clothing under power armor or combat armor. Certain clothing items (such as the silver shroud outfit, kellogg's outfit, etc) can't be worn under armor pieces. Anything can be worn under power armor, but their effects are negated.

Some mods can let you get around this. If you disabled a mod which does that, the game will obviously revert back.

Get Armorsmith Extended from the Nexus. It will help a lot with this, and with other things.

Yesterday, I was wearing an "armored clean black suit" UNDER my combat armor. I was receiving protection from it....IT STACKED. The defense of the armored black suit stacked with the combat armor. And in the weeks previous I had worn drifter's outfit and brotherhood of steel uniform under my combat armor and IT STACKED. Today it is not stacking, and can't equip all of them.

No one else has noticed this? I went to sleep last night with armored black suit on under my power armor and it was stacking...I had 179 defense. Now I only have 107 and It is no longer equipped. When I equip either one, the other is unequipped.

I'm NOT talking about power armor. I don't like power arm or and don't use it.

Your welcome. It is one of the best mods out there right now as it combines a couple other mods, and adds a lot as well.

You just stated the armored black suit was under Power armor, this is why peeps (including myself) are confused. Sorry

Ok, the "armorsmith extended" mod made it work like it was working yesterday. I can now equip my armored black suit (from the railroad guy, Tim or Tom) under my normal combat armor, and it gives me 172 defense again.

Yesterday, it was doing that WITHOUT the armorsmith extended mod, so i guess there was a stealth update, and it was decided we shouldn't be able to do that, or I dunno. Yesterday i worked without the mod, today it only works with the mod.

Wait, was just the black suit alone giving you that? Or was it with combat armour on top?

the armored black suit, drifter's outfit, road leathers, Long Johns, brotherhood of steel uniform, kellogg's outfit--all of those were stacking WITH my combat armor on top. And they are again with Armorsmith extended. They were doing it without the mod yesterday, but that stopped working for unknown reasons.

Today, when I started the game, only "long johns" would stack with my combat armor (note: i'm not talking about power armor, just combat armor, the power armor never stacks with the stuff under it)

Most clothing items have never stacked, or could even be worn under regular armor... I can't even apply ballistic weave to a clean black suit.
