Blacksmith is the most useless skill
The best melee weapon is Kremvh's Tooth and it doesn't require any mods.

And the best brawling weaoon is the death claw hand and it doesn't require the skill to upgrade it to the three claw version.

Because It has very high damage for a medium melee, almost as high as a heavy melee. And you can attach it's blade to a legendary machete which makes a double legendary effect.

What do you mean you can attach it to a machete?

IIRC the Kremvh mod is identical to a regular Machete with the 3rd upgrade, which is one of the weaker weapons in the game. For the bleed / poison bonus, you have to look really really close to even notice the effect. And it only works if the target isn't dead after your first hit.
If you read the "lore" behind it, you notice that it's just an easter egg.

The weapon you find is a legendary, but it's not the base weapon (machete) that makes it legendary but the mod. So you can remove it and plug it into an actually legendary machete. But as i said, machetes are pretty poor to begin with just like the "legendary" effect of the Kremvh mod.

My rating of melee weapons (Survival Mode) :

1. Rockville Slugger (or any VATS enhanced) - at least 8 attacks in VATS, room clearer with Blitz
2. Combat Knife (any) - also 8 attacks but only half the damage, best attack speed to quickly and silently dispatch guards with or without VATS
3. Super Sledge (any) - sneak attack does something like 3000 damage unbuffed, but enemies seem to get alerted by the attack noise and it's overkill against normal enemies even without stealth

That is assuming you play melee combined with stealth and VATS, as the 10x modifier is simply the highest damage you can get in Fo4 and Blitz is just amazing.
Obviously you'll need to be Blacksmith as well, since the mods for Slugger and Super Sledges practically don't exist as drops.

Instigating Super Sledge and Combat Knife could also be handy for certain legendary enemies where your regular openener doesn't instantly kill them, like Legendary Siegebreaker Sentry Bot. Of course there are still critical hits to deal with those.

I haven't tried all the melee weapons, but I love Pickman's blade. Super quick, high damage with bleed.

There is a type of power attack which does incredibly high damage, you dan do it this way: While sprinting press left click. Normal power attack which is done with the Alt key is useless I think, it's only good for stunned enemies. But if you do the sprinting power attack, the best one is a medium melee because Suupersledge is slow. Still very good if you can time the attack. I use it with the Moving Target skill and it does wonders. Also I wasn't talking about stealth, so Combat Knife is not my choice. I did my first playthrough stealth and regretted it. Too op, too boring. One shot everything and go. No action. Blitz is also an op skill and I don't use vats, so it's not a thing for me. I think Supersledge is for a tank melee build, I'm playing a fast melee build which is done best with Kremvh's Tooth. I run towards my target and before they can realize I cut their head off. And I just run and hide, then appeare from somewhere else. Like a ninja but not stealth, everyone is alerted. I don't even wear armor, it's fun to feel like a glass cannon. If I can't time the attack properly, they kill me.

But you don't start off with the best melee weapon. So what if you wanted to upgrade what you had available?

If you first start off on the game, you don't even KNOW about the "best" melee weapon, or where to get it.

There are so many different ways to branch off into this game world, it all depends on how you go about things, and that kinda makes the "best" perks pretty situational anyway, at least when it comes to "weapon upgrade" perks.

Yeah i'm still using that, it's just a "Wounding" combat knife that comes with the stealth blade upgrade ready to use. Since it still does like 890 damage with Ninja rank 3, the 25 bleed damage are irrelevant.
Decent legendary melee weapons are extremely rare as random drops.

As a melee player who doesn't need VATS, you're correct. By the time I acquired Kremvh's it was underpowered.
2 Hand weapons like the baseball bat, super sledge are really the only ones to use to do any kind of damage, especially against multiple foes.
I am currently using a legendary power fist I found though, that increases damage done on the target with consecutive hits.
Other than that, so far the melee can be quite boring, as there isn't a lot of cool weapons to use.

I would have expected in a game like Fallout 4 to have provided some creative, funny and innovative weapons, that can also be crafted, such as;
signpost mace
tree trunk club
airplane propeller blade/sword

You know, innovative and interesting stuff that you'd find in the world and put it together.
Instead we get boring and badly made amateur sword models that are re-used with different names on it.

I still like Fallout 4 as it is, but as a member of a series, no.. its a joke now.

Well the melee gameplay without VATS is terribly clunky and awkward.
If it was fluent and intuitive like in "Shadow of Mordor" i would probably consider using it instead of guns.

Agree that Sneak+Blitz gameplay can quickly get way too easy, as long as you don't get detected.

has anyone tried throwing a baseball grenade, using jet, and then hitting it with a bat?
