If you have a freezing weapon then you can just use that and it's easy to save kent.
Even if you make the others run, the remaining two immediately target kent. Unless you have an OP build that can vats headshot him fast, then the charisma check is the only option. Some people have stated that if they just come out of the last lift shooting and avoid the conversation, maybe everything targets them first as well... can't confirm that myself.
I might have to come back later then if I can .
First note; if you can kill the two anonymous henchman (one on either side) from the elevator, sneakily, Sinjin and Avery don't seem to care and this leaves just the two of them; they won't react at all until you get a bit closer.
If you have high Charisma and are wearing the Silver Shroud outfit, you may be able to convince them that you are the Silver Shroud. Sinjin will not believe you, but the others can back off; in this scenario, you still need to kill Sinjin in one shot or at least stagger him so you can finish him off before he can kill Ken.
Another option with the same setup, is convincing them to target you rather than Ken, reducing the risk that Ken dies provided that you're careful aiming.
If you don't have very high Charisma, and you're not carrying Grape Mentats for the giant CHA boost, your best bet is probably going to be something like (1) kill the unnamed henchman without approaching; (2) pop Psycho Jet; (3) kill Sinjin and then Avery, preferably using a high-damage weapon. Sinjin needs to die first, then Avery will aim at Ken so you have a very short window to kill/stagger her.
I had heard things about this being "bugged" and was worried. I passed the Charisma check after failing an attempt or two at other options. There was nothing buggy about it.
Grape Mentats are like +5, Reginald's suit is +3, various other outfits offer +2, various hats give another +1, food and drink can give a Charisma bonus as well.
If you don't spend your perk points every time you level up, you can save some for times just like this one. Can't progress because you need to pass a certain skill check? No problem, just give yourself what you need and try again.
