The great Potato Mystery of Fallout
At the Brotherhood of Steel terminal in the Prydwen, beside the mole rat experiments it says something like this:

"the Tato is a breed of a Tomato and a Potato, which are now extinct"
meanwhile in New Vegas you can get a "Fresh Potato" as a consumable.

http://fallout.wikia.com/wiki/Fresh_potato_(Fallout%3A_New_Vegas)

I also want to mention that the events of Fallout New Vegas begin in 2281
The events of Fallout 4 begin in 2287

Could it be that a whole crop went extinct in these six years?
or are the more "lore unfreindly" reasons.

new vegas made a lot more sense with the way it done most things also nearly every food/plant type had a use
FO4 is all over the shop in terms of lore and stupidity
maybe tato's are just potato flavored tomato's.......tasty

Bethesda chose to ignore much of what Obsidian did with New Vegas.

Which is a pity.

Why did they do this? I mark it up to a s s hattery.

But then its not that much tied to FO3 either with the abundance of PAs, the lack of depth in the settlement system, the shoddy distribution of the 'perk chart', no level cap system, rather excessive lack of underground exploration of subways..

New Vegas, as I understand it, was basically made from the remains of Project Van Buren (the cancelled fallout 3 from Black Isle).

But since Bethesda made Fallout 3 and own the rights then they essentially dictate canon, right? New Vegas came after Fallout 3 so if anyone is guilty of getting it wrong under new management we should probably point the finger at Obsidian for not updating their lore better, technically.

Or we could just understand its a ♥♥♥♥♥♥♥ vegestable and let things just be, yaknow.

Remember kids, if ANYTHING is different than NV, it means Bethesda does'nt care and is worse than Joseph Stalin.

I mean, yeah Fo4 has a lot of **** ups in it, but jesus christ man.

If you want some more lore friendly answer, regular potatos could just be a no show on the East coast. California and Nevada are a long way from Massachusetts.

Not like NV doesn't have it's own share of making it's own stuff up that flies in the face of previous games.

Where are my Cheesy Poofs, New Vegas? Fallout 2 had Cheesy Poofs, you don't. I bet you just didn't care did you NV? Why can't I use a Rock as a weapon NV? Dropping weapons from previous games oh my god those shallow casual console kids and their NV.

The short answer is yes, of course.

If a plant was going to be eaten off the face of the Earth, how long do you think that should take? If that same plant was in limited supply, grown in a particular region, etc. then it could happen even more easily. It could be as easy as a few farms getting hit by raiders, super mutants or the Legion, etc.

The Ancient Romans used to write about a plant that females coveted because of its abortive properties. They ate that plant off the face of the Earth. It no longer exists. If Rome could do that at the height of its power, New Vegas certainly could, without question.

Then of course, you have to consider the source of the information. It's just an entry from some scribe. They might be misinformed, drunk, or crazy. Just because you read something on the internet, doesn't mean that it is true.

Scribes need testing to tell the stuff everybody calls "razorgrain" is, in fact, grain that is somewhat pointy.,

Yes but the Bos comes from the Capital Wasteland
There are also Poatoes in F3 and most,if not all of the crew are from there
they would note then instead something like"it is a rarity but can be found on the West coast"
and then say "it is apparent that the Potato has not flourished as a crop on the East coast, instead, the Tato does"
Bansheebutt 2015 年 12 月 31 日 下午 8:00
Bethesda wrote that line because they thought it would cause lols. "Lol, in the future Potatos went exinct!! Isn't that funny and makes you think?"

I thought the whole Jet fiasco would've shown that Bethesda doesn't care about lore.

The operative term in that statement would be the word breed. Within the Fallout universe there is genetic manipulation. So it isn't far fetched at all for varieties of flora to have gone extinct. It also should go without saying that within the Fallout universe nobody seems to be in possession of a complete working knowledge. Think about it for a moment how would the Brotherhood know with absolute certainty if something was completely extinct. Maybe some enterprising person in the wastes of idaho unearthed a seed vault.

Yeah I know shocking isn't it. In a world facing down a nuclear apocalypse. People might have taken precautions to preserve the work of hundreds of generations of farmers by storing seeds away just in case the worst came to pass, and before you say all those seeds would have died. Think again seeds can be incredibly hardy things and last for millenia. Then again you could just be pragmatic about the whole thing, and recognize that the brotherhood is probably behind as far as updating their own records are concerned.

A problem we have even today, and we have the benefit of a world wide information network. At the end of the day you are nitpicking, and frankly it isn't even a valid nitpick. It can be chalked up to poor record keeping. We are talking about a universe where people live in vaults isolated from the greater world, and nobody in the wider world be wise to what is down in any of them. I swear this is the kind of nonsense that gives nerds a bad name. When you have hundred that are working on something for many years. There is no way everybody can be on the exact same page.

At some point close enough has to become good enough, and you should just be happy that the franchise still exists. Bethesda bought the franchise, and brought it back to life. Without them you would have no Fallout. Basically they did you a huge favor. Do you know how many fans of other franchises would give to just get even a close approximation of those franchises.

ITT: Bethesda are horrible and selfish because of a Tato and it's lore.
Von Faustien 2015 年 12 月 31 日 下午 8:08
didnt rivit city have potaos in there science bay? you have way to much faith in the bos there morons
Sepulchure 2015 年 12 月 31 日 下午 9:12
Extinct as far as BoS knows since House said that cats were extinct but clearly they're here in FO4.

Different parts of the country people, they only know so much.
