In my case leaving the asylum wasn't an option, which is why it was so frustrating. There's one part of the map where the only way to get there is to drop down a hole in an elevator shaft. Once you commit to dropping down that hole it starts a section of the map where *there is no way back out* until you continue on and finish out the quest. So if you can't move forward because he bugged out and won't open the door then you *also* can't back out and leave the asylum either because the door back out won't open until you finish the quest out.
No the worst thing is forget to pick up your Cha Bobblehead.
[happy necro 2015 btw]
The entire point of this old post was that you can't "just leave him". He's necessary to unlock the way *out* as well as the way *in*. When he got stuck in this state there was no way to just ignore this quest and leave it unfinished because the bug happened at a point where the way back out to the rest of the Commonwealth map is blocked until you finish the quest.
I feel like you didn't even read the post.
Well the game has bugged out to a point you can't play. My suggestion is load a previous save.
