These are just a few of the little tricks I've uncovered when building settlements. There's also a neat trick to making settlement sizes bigger: drop items on the ground, go into "build mode" and then click on each object and select the "store item" option.
I'm not a big settlement building guy but using these tricks I've made the Castle look pretty cool and expanded the livable area into the water.
