The mourning raider - Did you even care?

A raider kneels next to a freshly dug out grave, probably mourning.

What can you do?
When you approach he turns hostile.
You can sneak past him, or kill him and loot his corpse.
So basically nothing out of the ordinary.

This is so Bethesda. Brilliant detail woefully wasted because you can't change a thing.

Here are some ideas what could have been done:

1. approach him and talk.
   Tell him you understand, say that you are sorry for his loss and you won't kill him if he doesn't turn aggressive.
   
   
2. ridicule him and kill him afterwards then loot his body.
   
   
3. cripple him, desecrate the grave ask him how he feels, then leave him there.
   
   
4. Pass a speech check to ask what has happened.
   
   
5. Pass a difficult speech check to question if becoming a raider was a good idea?
   
   
6. offer him redemption and give him work at your settlement.
   
   
7. bring Marcy to the scene and let her decide.
   
   
8. watch Marcy and him get all sentimental and shît and watch both of them crying for the rest of your game experience.
   
   
9. tell him he is a raider, he has delivered more pain and suffering so he should toughen up and swallow that pain, then kill him.
   
   
10. tell him he is a raider, he has delivered more pain and suffering so he should toughen up and swallow that pain, then let him bring you to his boss. Kill his or boss or take the boss' place or both.

Why?
Why are we left alone with such a strong image, with such a tense situation?
It makes me angry because of all the missed opportunity. It should have been a bland game experience like Rage was. Instead it hints at greatness and fails so miserably shortly after...

... I hate to say but I am getting mixed message's from you. As far as plot goes Fallout New Vegas was far beyond Bethesda game's plots since well ever. Sure it is not as shiny as Fallout 4 but Fallout 4's plot is so weak it almost is not there.

As a complete game new vegas flopped for me, Fallout 4 was a much more complete game imo.

Obviously different people like different things but foe me new vegas was the low in the Fallout Franchise.

Fallout NV was made in 18 monthes, dev times were probably ~14. 4 had 8 years, of course it feels fuller.

I'm one that concerned much about story and I agree with you. That Marcy options, though. lol

I walked up to her (it's a girl in my game) but stupid Strong shot her first and made her hostile. Not that she was peaceful to begin with.

And for anyone wondering, there is a mod on the Nexus that makes this particular raider neutral. They don't attack you when you get close. So you can leave them or kill them.

Weird how many people want to believe in some bubblegum universe where the raiders have hearts of gold. He's a rapist murderer in mourning. Doesn't mean he won't try to rape-murder you the instant he sees you. There were raiders and pirates throughout history who behaved the same way. Surely they grieved their kith and kin dying as well. Didn't stop them from doing what they did and being what they were.
