The mourning raider - Did you even care?
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=585788121

A raider kneels next to a freshly dug out grave, probably mourning.

What can you do?
When you approach he turns hostile.
You can sneak past him, or kill him and loot his corpse.
So basically nothing out of the ordinary.

This is so Bethesda. Brilliant detail woefully wasted because you can't change a thing.

Here are some ideas what could have been done:

  1. approach him and talk.
Tell him you understand, say that you are sorry for his loss and you won't kill him if he doesn't turn aggressive.

  2. ridicule him and kill him afterwards then loot his body.

  3. cripple him, desecrate the grave ask him how he feels, then leave him there.

  4. Pass a speech check to ask what has happened.

  5. Pass a difficult speech check to question if becoming a raider was a good idea?

  6. offer him redemption and give him work at your settlement.

  7. bring Marcy to the scene and let her decide.

  8. watch Marcy and him get all sentimental and shît and watch both of them crying for the rest of your game experience.

  9. tell him he is a raider, he has delivered more pain and suffering so he should toughen up and swallow that pain, then kill him.

  10. tell him he is a raider, he has delivered more pain and suffering so he should toughen up and swallow that pain, then let him bring you to his boss. Kill his or boss or take the boss' place or both.

Why?
Why are we left alone with such a strong image, with such a tense situation?
It makes me angry because of all the missed opportunity. It should have been a bland game experience like Rage was. Instead it hints at greatness and fails so miserably shortly after...

I prefer answer 8

I don't think that this was a missed opportunity at all, the moment plays out exactly how it's supposed you could look at it as another Raider encounter, or you could take a moment to realize that for the first time ever you're seeing a legitimately human reaction from what up until this point has been basically Loot and experience bags as mentioned earlier, but in the end he's a Raider and you're the player character he has to try to kill you and you have to try to kill him. It's the way it is and if you look at it from a hardcore gaming standpoint this is probably one of the most immersive moments in the entire game. Because it Doesn't give you the option to change his future. And now from this point on omitting the fact that this is just a game you have to ask yourself every single Raider you killed was it a missed opportunity.

Sorry, wanna phrase that in english?

It was brown and empty because that's what a desert wasteland is like. I've lived in Nevada, and trust me, it's way more empty than the Mojave. It added to the theme of the game. Sorry it was made for normal people, and not 12 year olds with ADHD, but most people don't need to trip over content every 4 seconds. In fact, it gets kind of annoying.

If i was 12 i'd not have played New vegas..

I played Fallout 1 2 and tactics when they were released. Fallout 3 was ok but got boring, New vegas was hideous and Fallout 4 was the best since one.

There is also a Random Encounter, "Settler Burial", a preacher and three settlers gathered around a fourth buried settler. Upon approaching, the preacher will say a short eulogy, the other settlers also speak. Again there is no interaction for the player.

... I hate to say but I am getting mixed message's from you. As far as plot goes Fallout New Vegas was far beyond Bethesda game's plots since well ever. Sure it is not as shiny as Fallout 4 but Fallout 4's plot is so weak it almost is not there.

You do know it's common to simulate an accident or a helpless situation to trick people into lowering their guard in order to rob them?

But I'm glad that none of you here fell for the trick.

You cannot compromise with evil.

As a complete game new vegas flopped for me, Fallout 4 was a much more complete game imo.

Obviously different people like different things but foe me new vegas was the low in the Fallout Franchise.

There are a very many things that are in game as a curiosity, e.g. posed teddy bears and skeletons. You don't get to interact with everything and some Random Encounters are just curiosities,
e.g. "Blake's Funeral', (a freshly buried settler being mourned by a preacher and three settlers ).

Eh to each their own I guess.

hes destined to eternal grief cause ive killed him 10 times and he still spawns back in place, now i just go around :P but seriously i dont give a dam, raiders are so anoying they are allways trying to kill you, allways attacking your settlements, their bases are filled with severed heads and hanged settlers, some are truly horrific sights with evil touches, even this guy mourning his wife turns to shoot at you the minute he sees you. Its allmost impossible to feel any simpathy or compassion for raiders at this point, bethesda makes sure of that. I have better feelings headshoting them from the top of a bridge with my lucky sniper and watching them trying to find cluelessly where the shots are coming from. If some crabs show up in the mix i just let them have their meal, i have more compassion towards the poor creatures... Unfortunatly the nuanced and varied dialog system youre refering is long lost from the classic fallouts (1 and 2) bethesdas strong point is really the worlds they create in terms of exploration and hability to manipulate the objects in the enviorment imo, i totally agree with you on that point.
