i made a house myself in sanctuary but preston garley came and took over my house

how do i make it my own

They never bothered to put anything that allows you to make a bed your own etc, you can assign beds to settlers, but the companions can be glitchy about that.

You can 'sort of' make your own house.

Just build a sealed room, with not ground entrances but an entrance on the upper floors, build a platform a little distance away, close enough for you to jump to your 'house' then build a set of stairs up to the platform. If I need to explain what you do next, you do not deserve your won bed...

Unless the settlers spawn in the house they can't get in to use your bed.

Similar to Scraps suggetion, build the house you want, with no external door, when you want to enter, just move a wall section in build mode. Otherwise there is no way I know of to do it, other than putting your house at a settlement with no settlers/followers

Personally what I did was build a big barrack with a ton of beds before building my own home.
Never had any problems with settlers and companions taking my bed.
