1. Pick a ranged companion/give companion ranged weapon (dogmeat can't handle firearms, sorry :(((( )
2. Get the lone wanderer perk and go solo
3. Use VATS more often
I went full melee mode in one gameplay, and had fun with Cait or otherwise, batting enemies to death, bap, bap bap bap...
It's just timing.. I don't hit or hurt my companions and we've both been melee.
You could get that perk as a previous poster suggested, but that's for noobs. Learn the timing instead - will make you feel better about it all once you got it down.
Same problem here, playing without companions but it's impossible to fight near any kind of non-hostile beings in the game.
Melee is crappy enough simply because you are rooted in place while doing melee swings, so you are forced to use VATS where you can't even control which direction your melee cleave will hit.
What timing? I don't even use companions.
Just keep at it, and soon it will be second nature, and charging into a den of 4 raiders and doing fine.
You can also try modding your armor to have more strength, etc that can help with quick dispatching, or speed of movement, extra AP..
Look at the second entry on your armor mod slots to find these things. Also as you progress you will get more options.
There are also special armor pieces from Legendaries that you can find that will give you bonuses for standing still and mitigating damage and interruptions (which as you swing you are technically immobile).
So in a nutshell, I'm just saying be patient, take your lumps, but dont take the easy route and you will have more fun in the end. :D
Forward moving and double damage ... sometimes it's more effective to dash between enemies.
Definitely more entertaining.
Sidestep to go the right or left of your companion, and deliver the swing.
You don't need perks for this, because it is skill based.
You COULD perk no damage to your companion or w/e, but why waste a point when all you need to do is learn to use your weapon effectively.
I've gone full melee on one character, with no power armor, and did fine and Cait and I baseball batted all sorts of enemies to death and laughed while doing it.
That would be cheating. It's also lame, because you should be seeking challenge, instead of running away from them. Life lesson.
