Tinker Tom disappeared
From previous playthroughs, I thought that Tinker Tom was always in Railroad HQ. But I'm playing a game where is nowhere to be found. I covered every single part of the HQ. His desk, the beds, the back entrance hallway, P.A.M.'s room, everywhere. He is simply not here.

I'm relatively early in the story, doing Dead-Drop stuff. Does he go somewhere for a while?

Tinker Tom should always be present because he hands out the MILA quests.

I came back and he still was not there. But then I came back even later and had re-appeared

any mods? CC content?

Rarely, a NPC will spawn in a random location, and then walks back to their assigned point.

Had this happen with Papa Abernathy a few times... go get the locket, and when its time to return it the quest mark pointed me to the atom cats...

But, my game is also heavily modded.

Nope. Just vanilla Next-Gen game on PC from Steam

He had probably spawned into a wall or something. next time I'll do console to see where he is. What is it.. "player.moveto" or something like that?

I'd recommend against using the console for just curiosity's sake. He could just have been taking a dump ;)

When he sleeps, he sleeps all over the railroad. It is really easy to miss him even when you know he is there. I went through twice and finally found him on a cot the third time through.

Pooping out another of those ridiculous MILA machines he seems to love, no doubt.

For that sort of investigation, I'd generally save, investigate, then reload and use just the knowledge I obtained.

Moveto is a fairly safe command anyway (outside a few specific cases), though you've also got getdistance to tell how far away something is in game measurements, and TWF (toggle wire frame) to do an x-ray vision kind of search, which don't really cause any changes on their own.

As far as finding Tinker Tom goes, don't forget that there are those mattresses tucked off on the path to the other entrance. I don't remember seeing him bed down there, but you never know. He might not be present in the Railroad HQ if a quest like The Molecular Level demands his attention to handle the signal interceptor (if you got the Railroad's help for that).

Thanks I did check that back hallway to see if he was just sleeping there when this happened, He wasn't there either.

Ah, yes, the infamous Disappearing Act. The last time it happened to me was a couple of days ago at Finch farm when one of the sons disappeared, nowhere to be found. After a while he reappeared, though. I knew he would.

A week ago I “lost” a settler who was my vendor. I assigned someone else because I urgently needed to buy stuff then built a console that monitors/tracks npc and assigned the missing one to a scavenging station. Then I left. Next time I visited the settlement that guy was happily collecting junk.

Just go do some other quest and then come back and see if Tinker Tom is there.
