How to pick up and use items and put them in inventory?

Okay, I'm probably a dumb ass but I can't figure this out. I am at the beginning of game. I found various tools and a wand. When I pick up a tool it just drops back to the ground. I have picked up the wand but it just sort of floats around with me. I haven't been able to put it in inventory or use it in any way. Help me out please.

Press "E" to store in inventory, hold "E" to pick it up. Once you get your pipboy you will then have access to your inventory.

For objects you can pick up, tapping the button ("E" by default if you're playing on PC) will store the object in your inventory, while holding the button longer than a quick tap will cause you to instead grab the object and hold it in front of you.

There are also some objects in the game world that can only be grabbed, not stored. For example, orange traffic cones can be grabbed and thrown, but not stored.

The thing is that you don't have access to the inventory until you get the pipboy, which would be very soon from where you are

How did you realize how to grab objects without actually taking them? Since grabbing is a longer process than just taking..

Are you playing VR version?

You can sort of access your inventory before you get your pipboy. When you pick up a weapon or stim it adds it to your quick bar. so by pressing 1,2,3 etc you can change your weapon. Good if you don't want to waste your precious 10mm ammo on a few radroaches.

Dude, someone should totally rip the spell effects out of Skyrim and put them in FO4.

No. Just the regular PC version. I can get them to "float" by pressing E but I can't do anything with them

Just "tap" E, don't hold it down for a second or more.

I a, also having this issue. I can pick up everything, but not add to my inventory. Unless the items are already IN something like a dresser. If somethings in a dresser i can transfer them to my invent, but that is the only time. And even though i just reinstalled this game, I have a s@#t ton of hours playing it. i even have allll the DLC and have since the game came out. I am a super sad guy right now. I have run the 'verify files' and everything says its hunky dory. Also my char seems to be in hyper speed?

Ok, so its only the items in the vault. Outside the vault i can pick up everything. I did try to bring a pistol up out of the vault (and a few other items) with no luck. But at least i can still play again =]

The issue is that you're playing at over 60 fps.
