if installing a few mods makes it so the game just loads forever when I hit new game what exactly is the point? does this game inspire anything beyond frustration?

How to break it to you
But if your own installation process breaks the game
It's not the game at fault

Start by installing bug-fixing and performance-enhancing mods. If you only ever go for eye-candy, but do not also improve the game engine itself with appropriate mods then you are indeed only going to make it worse and not better.

If your mods are breaking the game, either figure out why and fix it, or stop using them.

I did what sdack said and installed performance improvement mods first. High FPS Physics Fix, Baka ScrapHeap, Buffout 4, and Fallout Priority Next-Gen.

Game runs incredibly smooth, and load times are near instant.

I keep seeing people hammer down on the game for being a slug especially when using mods, but the game after installing Load Accelerator runs fine for me at High settings in 4K. 5-10 seconds to load between instances.

Other must haves which are updated or work without needing an update:

Unofficial Fallout 4 Patch
Load Accelerator
Fallout 4 Script Extender (seems stable so far)
Address Library

Buffout 4 seems to work OK, but it hasn't been updated in several years, YMMV.

I just started the game after ~5years pause. Installed Around 90 mods and now I'm enjoying it. Dunno where the problem is? Install the right mods or lower your settings if your PC STILL can't handle this old game.

The truth is the game without mods still has caused problem for many. this forum has numerous reports of players with zero mods unable to play. I've played countless games over the year, installed them and they work. This 'upgraded' Fallout 4 is not so reliable. Don't blame the player for not knowing all the fixes, and don't blame the driver for not being a skilled mechanic.

Every player is entitled to buy a game and it should work. Having to install 'fix-it' mods is a disgrace. Some users installed the load accelerator and were delighted with the results. I tried the same and found no difference whatsoever. Clearly there are other factors, but as I say, I'm not a skilled mechanic, just a driver. I play games. And if it takes hours of research and experimentation to get a faulty game to work (with no guarantee a fault won't break it weeks down the line as it did with me,) I'm inclined to move on to some other game. I'm undecided at the moment. I've loved Fallout 4 for years but I'm gutted at the moment.

I'm just saying, I resent posters here blaming players because they don't know enough to spend a few hours fixing up an unreliable game.

Seems like you have a hardware or installation issue, the game runs perfectly fine on my 5 year old CPU with a 3090ti slapped ontop of it. It's fun I promise, just fix your computer or fix your load order.

There are only a small number of players reporting crashes with no mods. It's unclear whether they have just failed to correctly uninstall their mods or loaders.

The game is running fine for most people on vanilla and for many it's running fine with mods. Those people don't come here to complain though.

Are there some vanilla issues with the update? Yes. Primarily around the frame rate being not as high as some had hoped and problems trying to drive it higher. Other issues yes but nothing really game breaking.

One is not a bootlicker when one has enough talent and skill to fix one's issues and to move past problems with ease. Not everyone is incompetent and needs help. You can keep the name calling to yourself or just get good. Nobody on this forum works for Bethesda, but we are happy to help. What it does not need are people getting ugly. So suck it up, fix your problems, ask for help, or direct your complaints at Bethesda.
