being overboss/are raider settlements worth anything
i have never played the nukaworld dlc, and from what little research i've done it seems like so once you become head raider dude, you have to set up a normal settlement, then set up a raider settlement, so you can steal from/bully he first normal settlement you built, now i dont entirely know if this is the case but it always seemed profoundly stupid to me.

my questions are, is that the general gist of how that goes?
do the raider settlements actually produce unique or interesting items maybe not found in regular settlements?
do raider settlements kinda suck and are just for RP/flavor?

im interested in trying it because i like playing as a bad guy and even though i dont like building much, i was thinking maybe just 1 raider settlement at starlight and maybe like 4 or 5 normal settlements surrounding it for them to harass

Raider outposts can be made by taking over an existing settlement site, but it doesn't have to be an occupied one if you prefer to take over an empty site. You can also force regular settlements to become vassals and supply the raiders, or just have the raider settlements produce their own food (which causes a hit to their happiness, but is easily offset with settlement objects). If you don't want to build your own settlements to harass, you can just pick on the ones that already exist if they're close enough to a raider outpost.

The raider settlements do have a few unique raider items (notably include ones that automatically produce alcohol, chems, and loot), and they're not dependent on the Local Leader perk, since they're automatically linked to each other without provisioners. the raider versions of stores are made available through the Wasteland Warlord perk ranks that you get automatically for having enough outposts.

You get the second rank of Wasteland Warlord for just three outposts (which you'll already build by following the raider questline), and the third rank is only needed for building tribute chests (requiring 8 outposts, but the chests create free loot that can even include a legendary item now and then).

It's better to build up the food producing settlements first before becoming the overboss, so when you force them into being vassals they will then produce a nice amount of food for your lazy raiders. (Who hate to farm)

Best way to get a huge amount of caps and loot, the main issue is that the Raiders hate farming.

i always thought the raider thing was weird, since you already technically "own" all the settlements, you're just stealing from yourself. . .

Those Settlements don't provide loot, they only provide Food and water and you need to spend caps to get other items.

you can build shops on your settlements and assign settlers to them and then you can sell loot to them, but they will also share some of their profits with you at intervals, essentially paying you a tribute. it's usually like 1000 caps or something.

thank you all for the replies, i forgot and/or didnt know about some of the stuff here especially the wasteland warlord perk, but as i look more into that it says you need 8 raider settlements to max it, and wouldnt you need at least one vassal per? so thats at least 16 settlements i'd have to build right? that seems crazy! if i could do like 1 raider settlement and 7 vassals, and have that count i'd do it, could 1 mega vassal feed 8 raider settlements? that might be interesting actually

Not has high as tribute from the raider chests.

You certainly could do one mega-vassal, or have a whole load of them, depending on how much you want to develop as a warlord of the wastes.

Personally, I tend to ditch the vassals entirely, typically even capturing the one settlement the game requires to make a vassal as part of the story so that I can turn it into an outpost. I find it much easier to throw extra booze stills and pick-me-up stations at my raiders than mess around with vassals, though I guess I'd take vassals for role-playing purposes if I wasn't assuming my raiders get everything through more active raids.

There's definitely some nice loot on offer in the tribute chests.

You just have to make sure that no-one can easily reach them if the settlement/outpost sees active combat, because fighting NPCs trying to loot the tribute chest for weapons can cause an immediate game crash.
