The game has HDR build in already!! However, it only works in fullscreen-mode.

You also have to enable AutoHDR in Windows.

If you are running in windowed-mode then you need to install the High FPS Physics Fix. It enables HDR for windowed-mode (among all the other great things this mod does).

its reallllly old guys..... this engine is much older than its release date, and it shows it's age in 76 with all the synthetic boosts it got. quite surprised a boring tv show was all it took for this to be revived.

No, I think not. There is only a console command for it. However, I do not know which parameters it needs.

But HDR works beautifully. When you have a mod like ELFX installed for more lighting effects does it bring out the HDR quality in this game. It is like playing a different game. It is stunning at times. I would never want to switch back to SDR again with Fallout 4. I am playing it on an HDR10 ultrawide display.

Skyrim Special Edition has the same build in HDR. HDR enables itself once AutoHDR in Windows is enabled.

If for whatever reason you want to disable the build in HDR mode then you just have to disable AutoHDR in Windows, or, open the file properties to Fallout4.exe and disable the fullscreen optimisations. And like I said, HDR does not work in windowed-mode but needs a mod to enable it.

This is incorrect. The game output only SDR content.

AutoHDR is a fake HDR implementation, made by Microsoft for xbox originally, that artificially widens the lighting to try to benefit from HDR capable hardware. But unfortunately the source is not true HDR and the results are not as good as true hardware HDR rendering. Also, as it is not common knowledge, AutoHDR is only available in Windows 11 for a select, non disclosed, list of titles.

I am personally using Special K to add HDR to the game, but the results are not as good as a full HDR implementation like in Cyberpunk 2077 for instance.

Lol, the game doesnt have hdr built in.

Auto HDR is a windows 11 feature.

It can be turned on in the display section of windows if you have a hdr monitor and hdr is turned on.

RTX HDR might be a option, but its not really ready or easy to use yet.

Seems like using nvidia experience(or the new app I guess), might be the easiest way to turn it on.

Considering starfield has no hdr support, I dont expect the patch coming soon for fallout 4 to have it either.

No, wrong. You get HDR, meaning, you get a higher dynamic range, whether you can accept this or not. It will show on your display's info for the input signal that it is receiving an HDR10 stream, and the difference in visuals is then quite noticeable. If the game then did not support HDR in the first place would AutoHDR also not turn on.

i never actually gave that a try. I'll be tinkering later then.

I use windowed borderless mostly now and disabled HDR on the monitors as well as that G-sync Premium, dam monitors didn't know if they were coming or going the minute i powered On other displays. Re-calibration or whatever it did made it a flickering pain.
Spanning the 3 completely eliminates the problem and gives me a very nice game experience, very happy medium

To be clear, you get HDR with all the colours being correct. No burned out colours nor gray-pastel colours like when the colour space is wrong. However, one can get banding effects in dark places, which suggests it outputs only the upper 8 bits of the 10 possible bits in an HDR10 stream. So it is technically a sloppy HDR10 stream, but it is HDR. Just to ease the critics here ...
