You also have to enable AutoHDR in Windows.
If you are running in windowed-mode then you need to install the High FPS Physics Fix. It enables HDR for windowed-mode (among all the other great things this mod does).

But HDR works beautifully. When you have a mod like ELFX installed for more lighting effects does it bring out the HDR quality in this game. It is like playing a different game. It is stunning at times. I would never want to switch back to SDR again with Fallout 4. I am playing it on an HDR10 ultrawide display.
Skyrim Special Edition has the same build in HDR. HDR enables itself once AutoHDR in Windows is enabled.
This is incorrect. The game output only SDR content.
AutoHDR is a fake HDR implementation, made by Microsoft for xbox originally, that artificially widens the lighting to try to benefit from HDR capable hardware. But unfortunately the source is not true HDR and the results are not as good as true hardware HDR rendering. Also, as it is not common knowledge, AutoHDR is only available in Windows 11 for a select, non disclosed, list of titles.
I am personally using Special K to add HDR to the game, but the results are not as good as a full HDR implementation like in Cyberpunk 2077 for instance.
Auto HDR is a windows 11 feature.
It can be turned on in the display section of windows if you have a hdr monitor and hdr is turned on.
RTX HDR might be a option, but its not really ready or easy to use yet.

Seems like using nvidia experience(or the new app I guess), might be the easiest way to turn it on.

Considering starfield has no hdr support, I dont expect the patch coming soon for fallout 4 to have it either.
I use windowed borderless mostly now and disabled HDR on the monitors as well as that G-sync Premium, dam monitors didn't know if they were coming or going the minute i powered On other displays. Re-calibration or whatever it did made it a flickering pain.
Spanning the 3 completely eliminates the problem and gives me a very nice game experience, very happy medium
