Can't build on buildings?

So a couple places have buildings like sanctuary hills, grey garden, Taffington boathouse ect. It's been a while since I have done a run through but I seem to recall you can place things on these such as flags and turrets but for some reason I cannot put anything on them? Am I just mis remembering or is there something I am missing?

Are you using Place Everywhere?

Do you have the perks allowing you to place certain things?

You can place things in mid-air in this game I believe even in vanilla so it shouldn't be a problem. But if you're getting a RED OUTLINE preventing you, you should probably be running Place Everywhere if you want to do things like insert stuff into other stuff.

If u want to plant something in mid air, the only way i know, is to build a platform to the required height, build the item on top. then delete the platform....

This will leave the top item "In mid air". I'm pretty sure you cant place anything in mid air, with out some sort of base.

as long as the roof isn't too steep you should be able to place platforms on top of them. e.g you can put down posts ether on the roof of the boathouse in taffington or on the sides then attach floor segments to them to build a platform above the boathouse.

however the actual house settlers can live in can't have posts placed on the roof as the roof is too steep.

I'm not trying to place something in mid air i'm trying to put say a turret on the edge of a roof or a flag on the face of a building but I am getting a red outline in my attempts. I am not using place everywhere and I have the perks I need.

It have been quite a while, I've stopped playing but whenever I go back for a brief moment, all console parameters come to my head in a blink of my eyes. Don't rely on building in locations by using the game building system because is freaking painfull and not satisfying as you think it is.

Use console parameters to move the object, rotate them and snap the next thing to continue building otherwise you will just wasting time and patience.

My tips if you want to build turrets in areas inside buildings in relying on the building system of the game:

• Use decoration carpets and build the turret at the edge and while you carry the carpet, the turret will come along;
  
• When removing decoration carpets, the object or entity will not disappear like structure buildings usually do. But the entity or object will fall about a feet below so to fix things around, use two carpet decorations, one above the other and remove the one at the bottom so the carpet above carrying the turret does not clip the ground;
  
• You can combine carpet decorations and containers such as toolbox to stack another container and build inside shelves so it can fit.
  
• You can use as well those wooden/metal pillars from contraption dlc or Far Harbor extra content to build the floor and then start snapping torward a wall or world architecture.
  
• Hmm....what else...what else...hmm...pfft...can't remember but others may give other suggestion without having rely on console parameters or moddb/nexus modifications.
