what is "next gen" in the next gen update?
hey vault inhabitants,

I just wonder, whats about the "next gen" update, coming april 25th to consoles and pc. I wanna discuss the pc version here.

whats next gen? we dont get raytracing, not even the slightest graphics overhaul. we get widescreen support and some before to pay mods are now free. in my opinion, this collection of update features does not deserve to be called next gen update.

a "next gen" update makes use of the newest features, like DLSS/FSR, like raytracing, like frame generation. oh cool, theres at least widescreen support. too bad, that I dont have a widescreen monitor. there isnt the slightest ambition I can find in the update news. its just made with minimum effort to lure some watchers of the fallout series to play the fallout 4 game.

thats my opinion.

It is a good marking ploy, new customers are new customers after all. I think any new "next gen" stuff is really only applicable to the consoles beyond what you already mentioned.

I forgot to give them credit for the unspecified bug fixes that are also coming.

"Next Gen" only appears to refer to "Next Gen Consoles", but not to a "Next Gen Game". It is very likely only a standard update that allows the game on Next Gen consoles to run at 60fps instead of the current default 30fps. PC gamers can already run at 60fps (or higher when using mods, or simply by ignoring the symptoms).

The late update might be the result of pressure from the console makers, most likely Microsoft since they now own them. Consoles make their money with titles more than they do by selling hardware. The update will allow the game to continue making money on consoles by being able to run on big TVs with 4k@60Hz.

The rest are bug fixes, and we can only hope for the best but keep expectations in check, and of course some sugar coating in form of free CC content to get the "pill down".

Everything Bethesda has told us about it is in the news entry on your library screen. If you don't see it check your settings. Anything else is speculation, sometimes informed, sometimes not.

At this point, Bethesda's lack of transparency about the specifics of this update is inexcusable.

Which is just marketing as well, those aren't next gen consoles, they are current gen. I think at this point it's a bit silly to refer to consoles that have been out for 4 years and running on 8 year old hardware as next gen consoles. Btw. I am aware that's why you put it in quotation marks.

I'm waiting on the ultra wide support that is coming with it.

capitalism 101: more customer base, more possibility of profit. Epic store distribution, CJK font support for logging into CC/beth.net so Chinese and Japanese players on can spend money on CC credits, and as sd said, to make 60fps for current XB/PS so people will buy it again. The rest is stuff they had lying around they're throwing in the bag to make you feel like you're getting something. I mean for all we know "ultrawidescreen support" could just use previously unknown .ini directives to move the text closer to the edges.

we'll get what we get, it's not like we have any control over it.

re: lack of transparency, Todd knows his userbase, he can work up a crowd to a frothy lather of anticipation desire hatred and loathing, eventually just sighing and saying shut up and take my money already... he's many things, but he definitely understands the rampant fanboi mentality.

Starfield would have been a HUGE success had the world not changed and E3 still been relevant in 2022... after two pandemic cancels, then Sony and Nintendo both pulling out, then bigger shops like THQ? If E3 was the E3 of 2016? Starfield would have been the biggest selling Bethesda game, surpassing Skyrim. Because Todd would have been there, on-stage, and doing what Todd does - shill!

as I mentioned, I also dont think of next gen consoles, when I hear next gen game. think of witcher 3 next gen - THAT was a proper release. didnt run smoothly from the get go, but now it just runs like thin water on my rig. the content is, what I mean. its awesome! I doubt, that the fallout 4 "next gen" update is worthy of the name.

What some one knows If STEAM AND BETHASDA will brocken all us modling games like they did with SKYRIM SE? OR They learn about what they did to us few years ago. I hope this time they give us a choise to accept or not the UPDATE. If their not mean they donc take care about US and we are only $$$$$ for them , i wanted to stay polite

I believe that the "next gen" update is primarily aimed at updating the game for the current console gen.

As is basically any 'next gen' update to any other existing game.

Well, Skyrim SE got a Graphics update, but that was all time and resources that probably should have gone to TES6 anyway.

I think, this is true. that they adress issues on PC is just a nice bonus. primarily they aimed on console, tho.

Definitely prioritizing the consoles for sure. PC just got some low hanging stuff peppered in. You know, to optimize sales across the board.
Tiretracker Apr 20, 2024 @ 9:59am
The Next Gen probably isn't for "next gen hardware", but probably rather "next generation of players"

Fallout 4 got lit up after the TV show so they're catering to the influx of buyers.
