Fallout 4 is single-player. Fallout 76 is multi-player. Get Fallout 4, and then get everything else, too.

if youre ok with the learning curve for 1/2 I would recommend them. 4 for casual gameplay, NV for story and world. 3 is ok

depends on the player. my personal favorite is Fallout NV (made by Obsidian, just published by Bethesta). Fallout 3 is also quite popular.

But I haven't heard anyone mention 4 and 76 as the "best" series spin-offs

I think they all have their own charm to be honest. There's a loud "New Vegas" group, it does have the best writing, but I don't actually like the map/environment that much to be honest. Fallout 4 writing quality/speech is noticeably not as good as NV or even Fallout 3 which is saying something, due to their decision for the speech wheel crap, but general gameplay feels better and I prefer the map/environments.

Fallout 3 it's hard to say, behind both of those games but it's still fun. Fallout 76 is something else and I wouldn't recommend it unless you are looking for an "mmo" feeling game, I had fun with it but it's got a lot of differences to the rest of the games of course. Fallout 1 + 2 speaks for themselves, great games, but of course very dated and entirely different in gameplay and such.

Ultimately I mod the ♥♥♥♥ out of the games to suit my own tastes and I am currently playing Fallout 4 again, any of these games could possibly be your favourite, especially with the plethora of mods available.

If you can tolerate isometric, then start at the beginning. If you're used to FPS, then 3's a good intro. It might need a couple of command lines changed to run right though. FO BOS is a mess, that's if you can even find it anywhere.

Fallout 1 and 2 are more retro but great story. Fallout New Vegas has the best story beat however worst map in my book. Fallout 4 had the best maps but Fallout 3 has the best mods I have ever played quest/story/new lands wise. Fallout 76 isn't my type of gaming style so I can't tell you because I never played more than 30 minutes on it.
