As far as the "mechanics" of Dogmeat, well, BGS has never been the pioneers of game mechanics. Most of whats great about FO's identity wasn't done by BGS. They do did immersive sims and open worlds amazingly back then though.
I want to say there's mods to make Dogmeat better but I could be wrong. I just play with Everyone's Best Friend and and run around with him and another companion. It's broken as hell but I think it's far more immersive for me personally since we run around with our dog irl.
There's nothing like a Lab to make you quit taking yourself so seriously.
