Removing AWKCR ruined my save file early. Can it be fixed?
I removed AWKCR early on in my playthrough and didn't know that it would cause lasting issues. Modding armors at a workbench causes old recipes to disappear and become unavailable, and it can happen to weapons too. Even had an explosive double barrel shotgun lose it's legendary effect while upgrading it.
Is there any way to stop these things from happening? I've reached level 80 and would rather not have to start over again since I removed the mod near the start of the playthrough.

You could try reintroducing the mod, but otherwise, probably not... Mods which make major changes like that can have dramatic and long-lasting effects on a game unless starting a new game after removal...

And just to clarify, the mod didn't ruin your save... Removing the mod ruined it...

Already tried that, and the issue remained even with it installed. Yeah, I realize that it was removing the mod that did it. I just hope there's some way of salvaging the save as I've spent a lot of time building on it too.

Are you perhaps new to modding Bethesda games? Scripts often get baked into saves. Generally removing any mod from a playthrough mid-playthrough is a good way to cook yourself. There are mods that you can do so and be fine, but it's not a good practice to be in the habit of.

AWKCR is a broken mess.
Anyways: Removing plugins midgame is absolutely nothing you should do at all. Especially heavy mods such as AWKCR. Removing plugins midgame will result in issues, wether small ones or critical

But whatsoever, use ECO instead of AWKCR.

use ECO instead

Works perfectly fine when setup correctly... But removing it mid-play through, as is the case with many mods, will cause problems... I would imagine ECO would do the same if it changes item entries in any fashion...

AWKCR can work, yes. That doesn't change the fact ECO is objectively better in most regards.

AWKCR is known for a wide amount of problems, up to critical problems. A few ancient mods still rely on it, but overall, there is no reason to not use ECO over AWKCR at all.

Its just that new guys here dont know because AWKCR is still "most downloaded" on page 1 or 2. They simply dont know ECO exists.

When I use mods, I cease blaming Bethesda for anything. I accept that whatever I have is my mess. What I do blame Bethesda for is that their game functions better with some mods installed. VATS Freeze Fix is an example. Before that mod I could not complete the game in Survival mode because my game would crash in VATS in the Glowing Sea. I could never reach Virgil.

YOU ruined your save, NOT a mod.

Never remove mods unless you are willing to lose the save and start again.

I've learned that now.

Half the fun in FO4 is doing your new playthru anyways. I think I've done at least a half dozen over the years. Try different addons and choose different factions. Try out different builds. Theres lots of stuff to do.

But yeah, if you have a mod on your save then that save is modded forever. You want to get rid of a mod then you might as well just start over unless you have an old save without that mod on it that you can roll back to.

Also pay attention to how old mods are. Frankly, a lot of old mods were made with a low working level of knowledge of what makes the game have a tantrum. If it's just adding basic stuff or isn't altering world spaces or using a bunch of scripts, it's probably fine. If it's ancient like AWKCR, there's probably something better.

AWKCR wasn't even something I intended to use for the playthrough. It was just a mod I had forgotten to disable after I decided I didn't want the chaotic mod playthrough anymore. It's a shame I didn't know about this earlier on.

Yeah I tried it and realised I didn't like it but was forced to keep it because I'm too far into my game. Is it the one which adds all those annoying requirements for adding sprays and colours to armours? Like the pigments and paints, stencils etc?
