Go Starfield for all bad Followers.
But the best companion by a long way is the mod Heather Castlin. She leaves all of them for dead and the author keeps her updated. She can fight, she can barter with you,(she's a trader), she has unlimited ammo, her power armour never needs repair, she hates synths and she's good on the eye. She is miles ahead of the rest.
Dogmeats greatest attribute is his ability to get in the way. Once I'm finished with some mole rats, Dogmeat is retired to Sanctuary, where he can live out his life in peace...maybe. I get rid of him as fast as I can.
Pros: He doesn't complain. He doesn't chatter too much. You can jump over him when he blocks you. You can use him with the Lone Wanderer perk.
Cons: He will almost always fall from a high place and make that disturbing yelp.
Edit: I forgot to point out that when you dismiss Dogmeat to a settlment and you have only one doghouse at that settlement, then he will always be waiting for you in the doghouse. In larger settlements, you have to wander around looking for other companions or use the bell.
you can command companions to walk to specific positions, in dogmeat's case you can order him to walk up to you so you can talk to him.
as for him getting in the way of looting i have rarely had that issue. if it is happening almost every time i can't help but wonder if you have a mod causing the issue.
Nope. It's because he periodically runs around where your crosshair is. He also has fair odds of darting off again the moment he arrives where you tell him to go, so you have to be very quick about locking him into dialog to tell him to stop it.
I don't run companion mods.
I have 12000 hours from 2016 in fo4 and I have already tested all companions mods in nexus. All others are less good or buggy. Liga work perfectly with Combat Style mods for companions.
