So far they've all gotten on my nerves. They keep standing in front of me as I shoot, they block me as I try to maneuver around during fights, I've gotten pushed off ledges by companions and Old Longfellow just sings annoying drinking songs. I haven't tried Strong yet because I think we wouldn't be compatible. I've done Dogmeat to start with, but only for a little while. I've also done, Codsworth, Piper, Cait, Ada, Nick, Macready and Curie. I may like Curie the best.
I do like Ada for her fighting ability and ability to carry a lot. A big part of my game is grabbing every piece of loot I can, and having Ada as companion helped with that.
I still can't get Preston Garvey as a companion. I'd thought he'd be available after I got the crowd to Sanctuary Hills, but that never happened. I'm putting off re-taking the Castle for a while and I'm hoping that when I get to that he'll become available.
I confess to being mercenary about companions because I want the perk I can get from maximum affinity with them. But some of those perks are pretty meh.
Have you done the Sturges Line of Quests (fix up sanctuary). Preston won't join until Sanctuary is good to go.
"Are we ready to re-take the Castle?"
NO, PRESTON! NOW GO TO YOUR ROOM!
Not that I a judging mind you. Just pointing it out. Real Friends don't let you be the Overboss.
Lawful neutral danse
Neutral good curie
Chaotic good piper
Neutral dog meat
Lawful evil macready
Chaotic neutral Hancock
Neutrally evil Cait
Chaotic evil X6
And then you have whatever the hell strong is.
he doesn't judge you period. you could literally do the worst a human could ever do and he doesn't care. dogs aren't mans best friend for nothing.
unlike others the lone wanderer perk works with him. during combat he can literally maul an enemy. also since he is pure melee he doesn't need to be supplied with ammo.
he also doesn't have random dialog if you dislike that sort of thing and to top it all off he does not get in the way when you are shooting due to the fact he is not a humanoid.
The other companions are only worth keeping around to build up the relationship for more missions.
I haven't played with the robots from the DLC yet though.
Plus he has a low profile which is easier to shoot around during firefights.
