Survival mode is just not good
So I tried to play the game on survival mode for the 1st time in vanilla, and I have to say, the mode is just not fun at all. I can't even say the game is harder since you are also doing more damage, but it's just super tedious. You are forced to snipe enemies from distance as you can't get into any sort of shootout, cause you just get one shot so easily. The zones take forever to reset, so everything is empty. The food, water, medicines, resting, aren't hard to come by it's just basically QoL nuisance turned all the way up. And the fact you can hard carry anything means you have to run back forth carrying materials needed to buildup your settlements. The only good feature is no fast travel. So my conclusion is that if you just self impose no fast travel on Very Hard mode, the game would be way more fun.

It is very tedious and it is normally for people that use a specific build, mainly power armor or full stealth build. Most legendary enemy will 1 shot you even at max armor, you really need power armor. Not able to save and fully rest means all those settlement is crucial and you need to at least get a good bed, good amount of foods and clean water but without being able to fast travel between your settlement means you will waste tons of time spend on walking.

This difficulty is really a hit or miss to many people. I highly recommend you customised the difficulty on your own with survival mod. You can modify the dungeon reset time, damage received (default is 2x), fast travel option, hunger rates, etc. But I install it is for the quick save option.

I just beat the game on survival mode and found it VERY irritating until maybe 10th level. My build was weak so power armor was a requirement for any combat whatsoever. Some major fights/locations take up to 30-1hr to clear with no saving and boss fights at the end... so be prepared for that. Otherwise, pretty fun.

All due respect, but I don't agree. Rather, I think survival is best played by ignoring power armor entirely aside from your visit to Virgil. For many reasons, but power armor is too expensive, too heavy, too loud and conspicuous, too expensive to keep powered up. Plus, who wants to clomp around in it, for pete's sake? :)

My character uses ultralight armor and honestly I think this is the way to go in survival, light and stealthy. Power armor isn't wrong, and is iconic and people like it. I just disagree with the notion that FO4 is designed to be played with PA or somehow you can't succeed without it. I've dropped several hundred hours in to my vanilla run and maybe wore PA for four hours outside of Far Harbor

Agreed. PA won't save you. Spot first shoot first kill first, that's what will save you.

The survival is a great idea but they went way, way overboard with it. I always play with the survival options mod. It works without the script extender and gives you a holotape with options. I turn down the enemy damage to 1.25, turn off fatigue, turn on fast travel. Make the beds all have the same sleep benefits, etc.

The idea is good, but the execution is terrible. The enemies turn into bullet sponges, while you take two shots and that's it. For me, it should be the most "realistic" way. I think it's ok for me to take two shots and fall, but the enemies should go through the same thing. Survival mode should focus on strategy, you NEED to calculate routes between missions and locations to resupply. You need to think calmly about how to approach enemies, and be aware of when a conflict is worth it or not. Bethesda only added one or two poorly developed mechanics, reduced the player's damage and tripled that of enemies. Fortunately, it is possible to improve the experience with mods.

I love it when people whine about Survival mode and their reasons they don't like is EXACTLY what Survival is.

it's like they want to pretend to be in Survival, but actually not.

The only wrong thing with Survival mode is you have no camping bag so you can sleep in most normal places and that's easily fixed by a simple sleeping bag Mod.

I don't like because it's tedious, not "survival". You can get clean water, clean food, and antibiotics very easily. It should be renamed "Tedious" mode.

The only wrong thing with Survival is that the game isn't designed for it whatsoever: the AI acts without fear, people stand around gulping radiation clouds, dogs bite straight through steel power armor, the final missions of the game which were already a joke on the normal difficulties become absolutely absurd, molotovs kill you through walls, you die stepping off of cars, beds are unevenly placed as you say so you have to go around slapping mattresses down next to every workbench, single-investment perks do bizarre reality-breaking things like making you able to breathe underwater forever, I could go on for hours here.

As a "you gotta eat, sleep and drink" mode, Survival nominally succeeds but it's absolutely ridiculous in every other way, and I don't mean ridiculous in a good way.

Actually let me rephrase what I said last to be more true.

Surviving is tedious. Getting infected regularly is tedious. Needing food and water over and over is tedious. Getting hurt easier is tedious. Your surviving. Surviving is TEDIOUS. Get into that mindset.

People make excuses when they just can't hack it.

Exactly, thanks for agreeing with me.

Yep now go play the standard mode and leave us Survival gamers alone.

Survival mode is the only way I can play now. But whatever floats your boat, it's pointless to trash talk any mode. It's a single player game, just play how you want.

Definitely not for gamers in a hurry. Personally, I love it. But I tailor it with Survival Quick Save, VATS Freeze Fix and of course UFO4P. I am not interested in Iron Man style game play mostly because I will never be good and it. I don't like the sleep in a bed to save mechanic. I am not interested in being punished for dying by being forced to replay a game days worth of progress. That is the definition of un-fun to me. But someone else may like it.

I am willing to bet that a lot of players would hate my current build. At level 20 my character has 10 Strength, 4 Perception, 5 Endurance, 3 Charisma, 1 Intelligence, 9 Agility, and 1 Luck. Yes. You read that right. 1 Intelligence and 1 Luck. Fast level ups are boring for me. However, I have 3 ranks in Big Leagues. 2 ranks in Armorer, 3 ranks in Lockpick, 2 ranks in Lone Wander, 3 ranks in Sneak, 1 rank in Ninja, and 1 rank in Blitz, I was fortunate enough to find one piece of chameleon armor and I have managed to upgrade my clothing with rank 3 of ballistic weave. At level 20 I can sneak up on a Deathclaw and one-hit kill it with General Chao's Revenge. For me that is fun.

My point of this long winded post is to make of the game what you like. You have the freedom to do that.
