Put points in Strength (7) for the Steady Aim perk. Improves your recoil control by a lot, and at 3rd rank you get a damage bonus for hip-fired anything. Absolutely killer for the combat shotgun.
At least some of the top tier guns on Very Hard are best as automatic, like the Splattercannon / Problem Solver or things with wounding and explosive.
Of course, melee is much more powerful than all the guns if you build correctly for it (and ditch the power armor, it holds you back).
Yeah auto is great fun as long as you have the ammo.
Of course that's also true when enemies use them against you.
Then it dawned on me the commando skill for Automatic weapons is ALL automatic weapons whether they are pistols or rifles. So I switched my 10mm pistol to automatic and wow, it is pretty amazing.
